Research Portfolio Manager (APM level 4)

University of Nottingham
Nottingham, England
09.2010 - 10.2025
  • Provide accurate monthly financial reporting to the Heads of Research groups and analyse budget and expenditure data.
  • I am responsible for 11 of the 22 Engineering groups. Monthly, I forecast all staff and student costs for every project code. At present, I oversee approximately 340+ projects. The overall portfolio is approximately £107M. I regularly meet with several Principal Investigators (PIs) to provide guidance and support on how best to manage their projects.
  • Monitor and interpret all projects that are linked with the Future Composites Manufacturing Hub to ensure overall key performance indicators are met. This is an EPSRC-funded grant worth £10.2M - I was responsible for the original costings and ensured all sub codes had the correct budgets. I monitor these projects monthly, including forecasting all staff costs, and liaise with Research & Innovation regarding any anomalies I find. I ensure that all new Feasibility studies comply with the grant conditions and that funds are drawn from the appropriate main project. I frequently liaise with the external partners, ensuring invoices are correct and within budget.
  • As one of the Business Operations Managers, I line-managed 2 APM officers. I oversee all their responsibilities, including all Services Rendered projects, Computer orders, Campus Solutions (student stipends), and the authorisation of all staff and non-staff expenditure up to £10K.
  • I provide portfolios and Income spend reports to Senior Management and Academics in preparation for performance reviews.
  • Audit Management:- Manage the collation, preparation and delivery of information and documentation for internal and external quality audits and other quality assurance activities.
  • Responsible for adding any supplements & extensions on our costings data base Research Innovation System (RIS).
