My desire to become a nurse started in childhood, when witnessing family members battle with their health conditions. My goal was to become an excellent holistic nurse delivering gold standard care, placing the patient at the centre of all contact. To treat people as I would like to be treated and to carry out care as if I was caring for a family member. Always remembering to remain impartial and professional working within all professional boundaries and legal requirements.
I have had various jobs in health care gaining experience and knowledge throughout my career. Working in burns and plastics, theatres, endoscopy, challenging behaviour and community nursing where I am currently working, I am highly motivated and a hard-working professional. But saying this I am also relatable, kind, caring and passionate in delivering a high standard of care for service user, care givers and relatives.
I work well in a multidisciplinary team but equally confident working independently referring any concerns back to the registered nurse and escalating further if needed. I seek advice and support from the wider team where appropriate. prioritising my workload, completing all visits in the allocated time. Also taking extra unscheduled visits to see patients at short notice. My experience as a community nurse associate has provided me with an insight into the on-going challenges faced by the individual with the lack of understanding and education in diabetes. I am enthusiastic about helping the service user to understand their condition and enabling them to eventually become independent where possible. I am passionate to further my experience and knowledge in diabetes. I continue to increased my background knowledge by ongoing self-learning in diabetic health, completing a foundation diabetic course, ten points of diabetes and receiving regular emails from DIABETES UK, keeping up to date with current information has given me the confidence and platform to develop my clinical skills in a holistic way by putting the patient at the centre of my care. I have empowered patients to feel comfortable to be able to ask questions and airing their concerns about their diabetes and care. I pride myself on having excellent communication skills demonstrating empathy which is key to building a good rapport with the patients, carers and relatives from all walks of life and ages supporting them holistically spiritually and mentally to be able to feel confident with managing their health condition. by patient involvement with education and a personalised care plan will give autonomy with their treatment. I have actively encouraged patients to become independent and self-caring where possible. Given them the tools, support and confidence to be independent enabling them to make informed decisions with their health conditions (diabetes)
I have continued to look for avenues to progress and gain more knowledge and experience linking evidence to practice. By following the nursing 6cs, compassion, competence, communication, courage and commitment. I make every visit count going above and beyond looking at the bigger picture and not just the task thus delivering gold standard care. I am constantly making evidence based clinical decisions incorporating organisational policies and procedures whilst implementing the NMC code of conduct. The skills and experience I have gained are transferable and has stood me in good stead to progress be one of the first qualified nursing associates (trail blazers). I completed the nurse associate degree in 2019, the 2-year degree course was completed alongside working full time. this I found challenging due to my dyslexia, I overcame the challenges by being open and transparent with my line manager, facilitators and the other people in my cohort, I was committed and determined to complete the degree and did so with merit.
I am always evolving and looking at different ways to adapt the care I provide. To enable the patient to be as independent as possible. I pride myself with good documentation, which is in depth and factual, completed in a timely manner. Incorporating the patient’s situation, relevant medical and social background, assessments, and recommendations from of the visit for on-going support and treatment.
I teach and mentor year one nurse students, trainee nurse associates and new employees in my current role. I have taught colleagues in the importance of using the correct wound dressing, venepuncture, catheterisation and insulin administration. from group setting and on a one-to-one bases always having good feedback.
I am excited and enthusiastic to further my experience and gain more knowledge in diabetes and to make a positive difference in the lives of the people I come in to contact with.
Thank you for taking the time to read my personal statement.
