I am a hugely experienced journalist with a 40-year career in national newspapers, most of them in executive positions, culminating as editor of the Daily Star in London.
I originated the "Liz Truss lettuce" front page, which made headlines around the world and helped to bring down a Prime Minister. It was also the greatest example of synergy between print and online brands. I was flown to New York to be honoured by the International News Media Association.
I have been executive editor of the Daily Express, executive night editor and online editor of The Sun, and assistant night editor of the Daily Mirror. My areas of expertise are leadership, organising teams, strategy and delivery, page layout and headline writing, digital journalism and copy-editing. As an early adopter, I was there at the start of online newspapers.
My strengths are clear thinking under pressure, a fierce work ethic and a desire to take on new challenges. I have done every job in journalism, to a very high level and in very testing circumstances.
I joined the Daily Star in 2018 as deputy editor in chief and editor of the Daily Star Sunday, working with editor Jon Clark to transform the papers. In 2025 I was made editor of the Star before leaving in a restructuring to seek new challenges.
My second stint at the Daily Mirror, working from home in France as a sub editor after the arrival of our twin girls before getting the call from Jon Clark to be his deputy at the Star. The family moved back to Britain.
A second spell at the Sun, starting as a sub before quickly being appointed smartphone editor, running a team to produce a 24-hour digital product. During this time, I commuted from our home in France.
Page editor at Presse Media 81, an outsourcing company based in South West France. I subbed, chief subbed and designed live news pages for the Evening Herald in Dublin and for many of the Irish Independent's magazines. I gained experience on remote working and managing teams producing high volumes of copy and pages. And I learned French.
During the summer of 2008, I was one of a two-person team that redesigned The Sunday People from top to bottom, taking the project from initial ideas to relaunch.
I was appointed night editor of the Daily Express, but took over as executive editor two months later. I was No3 on the paper with responsibility for all production. I drew most of the pages, wrote most of the headlines and ran a team of journalists and artists. I edited the paper in the absence of the editor and deputy editor and consulted on the online editions
I oversaw layouts, organised production and consulted on the online edition. I helped the process of moving to new deadlines and reorganised the production desks.
I joined The Sun after doing subbing shifts for the Manchester and Irish editions. I worked my way up to become assistant night editor within a year and ran the Manchester and Irish editions. I spent eight years night-editing the paper and was at the forefront of the internet revolution, becoming The Sun’s first full-time online editor, taking impressions from 10,000 to 1,000,000 within six months. I then rejoined the back bench as executive night editor.
I worked as a reporter on the Chorley Guardian, Lancashire Evening Post, Bolton Evening News, Shetland Times and Kent Evening Post, then as a sub on the Bolton Journal, Citizen Newspapers and Liverpool Daily Post, On the last three newspapers I moved into production and finished on the Post as deputy features editor.
I am married with two young children. I'm from Bolton, Lancashire, but have worked all over the country and abroad. My interests include football, cricket, books, films, music, Shakespeare, fell walking, cooking, travel and gardening.
