  • Working as a “hands on” production supervisor within the foundry department, Union Electric Steel producing high-quality cast rolls for hot and cold strip mills, medium-to-heavy section mills, and plate mills. Responsible for various teams of floor staff forty plus employees across three shifts and five areas within the factory, I lead and motivate my team to ensure all daily tasks and production targets are met. My role involves managing workflow and delegating tasks, I also evaluate performance, set goals, and identify training and development needs. I have good problem-solving and critical thinking skills where I ensure to implement solutions to any areas that require improvement. In my role I also provide reports on performance and consult with management to form a bridge between employees and upper management communicating expectations and ensuring compliance to ensure smooth operation and achievement of company objectives.Main duties include:-

Observe and monitor argon stir process, control, and monitor cast wire feed process. Calibrate SG wire feed machine monthly. Check all 5C/Lean manufacturing checks on the rocast machine; melt platforms, ladles completing all data on audit sheets. Checking of various sand testing processes to ensure they are within specified tolerances. Control of NCR logging updating data onto internal computer systems

My job is to maintain quality safety and housekeeping standards to enable the smooth operation of production to meet output goals. Duties include undertaking preventative maintenance, adjusting running settings to meet centerlines and diagnosing and resolving process, mechanical and quality issues. Also completing daily operation logs equipment checks, material ordering and safe use of overhead rolling crane. Working with and adjusting photo-electric, proximity and guard switches etc. Replacing parts such as cutting blades, guides, rollers, and drive belts. The job also entails consulting with staff in group activities to come up with ideas to improve efficiency and safety. Use of computer systems to document changes to settings and general ongoing maintenance work performed.

Foundry Production Planner

  • Working as a part of the Davy Roll melt supervision team within the foundry manufacturing Back Up, Static, Rocast Rolls Etc my main duties include: -
  • Scrap Management (Internal/External) – Control and identification of all rolls on site and external scrap rolls Throughout The country checking roll analysis, weights, dimensions, and rolls details. Once the desired rolls have been identified I would consult with the purchasing department who would then bid for the approved rolls. I would then have overall control of organizing roll removal storage and loading to various contractors throughout the UK for processing requirements.
  • Turnings, Heads, pour out Skip Control - Control and identification of all machined turnings/roll heads and pour outs. These are created when machining rolls from an as cast roll to a machined customer status and excess metal to be re-melted to save costs. The turnings are recorded by qualities weights and dimensions which are then stored in skips until the melt department require turnings/pour outs for charging the furnaces.
  • Charges – creating charges for three induction furnaces and three BBC furnaces within the Davy Roll Company. The charges are achieved using internal computer programme utilizing internal and external scrap from the yard including turnings, heads steel bale, plate, and alloys to achieve the best cost furnace charges.
  • Responsibility of deliveries – Check/accept deliveries of additives such as: Liquid Argon, Liquid oxygen, steel bale, plate, which then have regular analysis checks to maintain the quality of the roll product we produce.
  • Bandsaw Operator/Burner – Control and supervision of the bandsaw operator/burner controlling and supplying scrap roll pieces, sample pieces scrap steel fabrications which the operator would then internally process. This includes delegation of the operator’s duties on a daily basis.
  • 18Tonne FLT Driver–Supervision of 18Tonne FLT Driver and delegation of the driver’s duties on a daily basis.
  • Craven 7 – Craven 7 is a dedicated roll turning machine which was identified to internally turn scrap rolls from the foundry generating valuable returns to the foundry. I was controlling the identification and sequence of rolls supplied to the machine controlling and recording all returns generated to the foundry.

  • Chemical analysis - Using an arl spectrograph machine to test samples from the induction furnaces and disa production auto pour to ensure customer specifications are being met.
  • Micro-structure analysis - Using a cut off machine and polishing/grinding equipment to check micro samples.
  • Sand testing - Performing checks on the sand from the speed Muller sand miller required for the disamatic sand moulding machine to ensure that they are at the correct standard for production.
  • Test bar control – Collect/organize samples ready for relevant checks for example heat treatment/tensile test.
  • Brinell hardness testing - performing bhn checks on castings to ensure all parts meet customer specifications.
  • Responsibility of deliveries - Checked and accepted deliveries of additives such as: sand, coaldust, clay, steel scrap which are important elements to maintain the quality of castings produced, also responsible for deliveries of general equipment.
  • Tensile tests -test bars are machined up on a lathe the dartec tensile machine is then used to pull the samples, the result is then recorded and checked to ensure the customer specifications are achieved.
  • Cut and mount parts to ensure quality the micro-structure some castings have to be cut using a band saw and mounted using a resin mix. R&D for new products and projects- part of the project for continuous improvement
