David Hurst

Senior Systems Engineer
Belfast

Summary

I have been managing complex IT infrastructure in a large Software House for 25 years dealing with the complex requirements of 700+ developers as well as the more normal administrative functions such as HR and finance. Being team leader for a team of up to 8 engineers my role was to design and implement not only basic infrastructure such as WAN’s firewalls and wireless, but also the more esoteric environment requirements specific to software developments such as code repositories, Wiki’s, replica test environments. I also ensured that the more standard environments such as Exchange, Web Services, SharePoint, Active Directory, file services, HR and finance apps such as SAP and of course making sure that everything was backed up locally as well as being replicated to our DR sites. This environment was a mix of blue-sky new technologies as well as integration into an existing well-established Global Enterprise Environment. This required a large amount of tact and superb communication skills to win over the support my American peers. I also worked closely with our facilities management team to ensure our work environment was as good as it could be and that when we expanded/ refurbed that we could incorporate the latest technologies and ideas. With over 700 users, break-fix and refreshing user laptops as well as patching and updating was a high priority, which included working with suppliers utilising global contracts as much as possible. I was also responsible at one stage to ensure that our licensing was managed correctly, at that stage we had over 200 different pieces of software to actively manage. In my previous role I was in technical pre-sales, designing solutions for customers using a variety of platforms to suit their individual needs. I then installed and supported those implementations according to agreed support contracts. I was also Workshop Manager looking after a team of 5 engineers ensuring that we kept our Toshiba Preferred Repair workshop. This meant that we were audited monthly by Toshiba to ensure we met their highest standards. Dedicated Senior Systems Engineer adept at collaborating with clients and team members to determine job scope and project milestones for mechanical systems projects. Over 35 years of systems engineering prowess and knowledge. Proactive and structured with drive for innovation.
