David Cox

Test Lead
Bristol

Summary

Having joined the workforce as a sales rep with a degree in history, a career in Software Testing was a surprise to all, not least myself. Whilst working as the Sales Manager with duties of project managing clients, I discovered my meticulous nature had an industry where those traits were welcomed. Since then I have progressed my way to the Test Lead/Test Manager level I now find myself at. I have learned technical skills on the job and through committing myself to learning outside of work and am usually enrolled on some sort of course! I am a strong believer that skills, both soft and technical, should always be improved upon when the opportunity is there. My main professional goal is to find a company that can help me channel my ambition and to continue to progress. I actively enjoy engaging with people with a varied background that I wish to find a position that utilises the skills I have developed.

Work History

QA Test Lead

QualiTest
Bristol, Bristol
09.2011 - Current

For clarity, I have been employed at QualiTest for 12 years in two separate occasions. I have combined the periods May 2017 to present and March 2011 to February 2016. At QualiTest I have worked on multiple project in various industries. After starting as a Sales Manager, I moved into testing after showing an aptitude for the role, whilst acting as a stand in project manager for Crowdsourced testing, a role I returned to later on in the employment. I am comfortable with operating as a hands on tester and working in a leadership role concurrently.

  • Leading teams between 2 and 6 people, offshore, onsite and combined over multiple projects. Working across both Waterfall and Agile methodologies, I have taken responsibility for all output of QA teams.
  • Providing QA expertise in Functional and Non Functional testing in multiple industries, including Telecommunications, Insurance and Consumer Technology.
  • Effective management of all test related activities using JIRA and HP ALM.
  • Led Defect Management meetings and driving resolution, based on priority and RAID principles.
  • Leading efforts for a unified approach between Business Analysis, Development and QA teams to create efficient documentation, test plans and strategies, requirements that were compliant with a 7 step approach and the creation of Test to Requirement Matrices to ensure coverage.
  • Implementation of test metrics analysis to understand the current limitations of testing efforts and how they could be improved.
  • Project Management of Crowdsourced testing efforts through a partner "uTest" now "Applause". This role involved a high level of communication with the customer to understand requirements and their focus for 24/7 "In the Wild Testing." Further to client interaction, this involved skills such as budget management, platform integration with their existing Defect Management Systems, Defect Management, Tester Management and Test Strategy.
  • Creation of handbooks for new testers joining the company/product with FAQs and general information to ease their integration.
  • Technical testing in the Telecommunications industry, mentoring new joiners in their understanding of networking, test principles and tool usage. Usage of tools such as Wireshark to understand the path of a packets journey through a network.
  • Worked as a Cyber Security Lead in an Insurance Client finding and analysing Security threats using SCA, SAST and DAST tools.

Sales Director

QA Mentor
Guatemala City, Guatemala
03.2016 - 03.2017

Having relocated to Guatemala, I set on a new challenge of creating a partnership model with QA Mentor. After discussions with the CEO, we agreed on a partnership that would allow me to use the resources of the company to bring it's services to new markets, principally Central America and the UK, while splitting the profits made in these new ventures.

During this time I was responsible for:

  • Being the first point of contact for all incoming leads
  • Sourcing, creation and maintenance of a new CRM
  • Managing a multinational team of sales people, including holding pipeline meetings.
  • Helping conduct training sessions in sales techniques for new employees
  • Personal management of QA projects for clients whom I had set up a proof of concept test cycle.
  • Creation of marketing material and campaigns, including a weekly newsletter for subscribing potential and existing customers.
  • Blogging for the company website
  • Building a successful franchise within the company reaching markets that were not currently in the focus of the US and Indian based Sales team.

Additional Information

I am a keen sportsman approaching his "coaching years". I am the social secretary for Rockleaze Rangers FC, a team I have been involved with since I was 6 years old and manage the 'B' team there. For my sins, I support Bristol City. I also play and umpire cricket, surf and boulder. I have a passion for military strategy gaming as part of my wider interest in general history. Having worked in Guatemala, I speak reasonable Spanish and constantly try to improve my ability outside work.
