Work history

Coal miner

UK Coal
Coventry, West Midlands
08.2005 - 05.2013

Starting my mining career at 18, I progressed through various roles, gaining extensive skills, qualifications, and experience in underground operations. I began with belt conveyor patrol, ensuring smooth material transport, before advancing to belt maintenance, where I honed my technical expertise. Training as a loco guard/signaller, I managed underground railway operations with strict safety protocols, later qualifying as a FSV driver (Emico 912 & 942 Excalibur), supporting heading driveways and logistical supply chains. My final role as a fully trained header saw me working in both mesh/bolt roadways and steel ring reinforcement, operating the Joy ED15 Hydramatic rigs to maintain structural integrity and efficiency. Alongside these hands-on experiences, I obtained an NVQ Level 2 in Mining, reinforcing my knowledge of safety procedures, operational best practices, and underground teamwork, ensuring high-risk environments were managed effectively. See attached documents for other various qualifications obtained.

  • Ensured operational safety in confined, high-risk environments, adhering strictly to HSE protocols and industry regulations.
  • Expertly operated heavy machinery in heading operations, contributing to efficient roadway development and structural integrity.
  • Maintained rigorous adherence to PPE requirements, ensuring full compliance with health and safety protocols to safeguard personnel.
  • Specialized in underground teamwork and emergency response procedures, fostering a high-performance, risk-aware environment.
  • Documented critical operational metrics, including labour hours, project progress, and safety reports, supporting effective workflow management.
  • Executed machine and tool maintenance, performing routine cleaning, lubrication, and inspections to ensure peak performance.
