Daniel Lewis

Hello, my name is Daniel. I am 18 years old, and I have just left Neath college, I am writing to you today as I would like to apply for a job in this company as I have always dreamt of working in the Tv and film industry as I am a lifelong film maker, I also have an interest in the work you do and the people you work with.

One aspect from the art of filmmaking that I love and would like to work in is cinematography and two people who inspired me was Robert Richardson (Kill Bill and Django Unchained) and Michael Ballhaus (Goodfellas and The Departed), these two men inspired and showed me to the true beauty of cinema. Robert Richardson cinematography use of colours and shadows Kill Bill has always appealed to me as it creates a sharp contrast between the shadows and dark blue light which also creates a sombre and more serious tone which fits the scene and makes a striking visual which conveys a serious message and one that sticks with you.

Another person who inspired me was German born cinematographer Micheal Ballhaus who work on some major US films like Goodfellas and Gangs of New York and this shot in particular really stood out to me, Lack of lighting creates a gloomy and depressing atmosphere with blinding being used as a metaphor for to show that Henry Hill is trapped in this life and the stare into the distant with the pale skin gives him a zombie look as if he knows he’s reigned to his fate and knows he’ll never leave the life, with the camera slightly beneath us to reflect his largened ego that he has.

The passion I show for cinematography is clear and from a young age I've always been interested and intrigued about how films look and the effort that goes into them. I would appreciate it if you took my application into consideration and gave me an interview. Thank you in advance.
