Work History

Lead Mechanical Engineer

Altek Europe Ltd
Chesterfield, Derbyshire
01.2012 - 02.2025

During my 13 years at Altek I have been the technical lead on over 100 projects and have built up an expansive knowledge of the Altek range of cast house equipment, along the way I have also gained a lot of experience of cast house operations by visiting customer sites around the world to carry out technical site surveys, installations and troubleshooting

I have been a key team member involved in the continual development of Altek technology as well as assisting in shaping Altek engineering systems and processes.

Key achievements for me have been:

  • Development and launch of the world’s first curved electromagnetic stirrer, to suit domed furnaces
  • Being responsible for the design & manufacture of complex, bespoke EMS movement systems and working directly with the customers to ensure seamless plant installation and equipment commissioning,
  • Ensuring that all equipment is compliant with current legislation (Machinery Directive) and that the Technical File & Documentation is produced to the required standard.
  • Improved production efficiencies by devising standardised mechanical solutions.
  • Delivery of detailed technical reports to inform decision-making processes.
  • Adherence to project timescales & budget constraints, while delivering optimal results.

Senior Project Engineer

British Rema Ltd
Chesterfield, Derbyshire
11.2008 - 12.2011
  • British Rema specialise in the development, design and engineering of processing equipment and systems for the manufacture of powders, and products in granular or agglomerated form, Equipment included spiral flow jet mills, opposed jet mills, impact mills and ball mills), as well as air classifiers, sieving, mixing, dust collection & filtration and drying equipment from R&D scale through to large industrial plants
  • My role as Senior Project Engineer involved the full design and project-management of major turnkey systems installations/integrations within the pharmaceutical, fine chemical, mineral sectors and other industries around the world using British Rema equipment as well as collaborating with leading suppliers of ancillary equipment as required
  • I was responsible for a small team of engineers whose function was to provide full installation, commissioning and validation services and provide relevant documentation for pharmaceutical operating environments
  • A key achievement was the turnkey installation of a state of the art air micronizing process system at a leading global pharmaceutical company, The systems was intended to process an API which was a constituent part of formula used in the battle against MRSA bacteria, At the time, the client claimed it was the most advance micronizing system they had ever specified
  • The system was had to be fully sealed to prevent egress of the API as it was harmful to life, the powder was classified as an explosive substance, therefore the entire process was nitrogen purged and to complicate matters further, the external cleaning regime involved the use of solvents so the entire system was ATEX classified as Ex II 2G (Internal & External), II 2D (Internally) and II 3D (Externally)
  • Enhanced project success rates by introducing data-driven decision making.
  • Delivered high-quality outputs within strict deadlines for client satisfaction.
  • Delegated tasks appropriately among team members to optimise resource usage.
  • Liaised effectively with clients and stakeholders for consensus on project goals.

Design & Project Engineer

Palamatic Handling Systems Ltd
Chesterfield, Derbyshire
01.1999 - 11.2008
  • Company Overview: I was employed by a successful company which specialises in the supply of materials handling equipment
  • Initially my main role was overseeing the development & design of a range of materials handling equipment, which was specifically aimed for use within the Pharmaceutical, Chemical & Biotech markets
  • This involved the complete design process starting from generation of product design specifications, CAD design concepts, design evaluation & calculations, detailed CAD design work, production of CAD manufacturing & assembly drawings, generating parts lists & sub-assemblies, overseeing prototype build/assembly, product testing, creation of technical files for CE & ATEX compliance, O&M manual & compilation of product technical sales literature
  • Once the ‘PAL-Pharma’ range of equipment was successfully introduced to market my role became more project oriented, As such I was responsible for managing all aspects of customer projects from the pre-sale stage, through to the final installation & commissioning of the equipment on site, always with the emphasis on meeting the following criteria: - working to customer specification, meeting agreed delivery date, achieving payment terms and achieving the target margin or better
  • The role required me to possess excellent working knowledge of AutoCAD, SolidWorks & Microsoft office packages
  • A thorough understanding of Safety of Machinery regulations, C.E Legislation & DSEAR / ATEX directive
  • Best design practice, c.G.M.P, industry/regional standards, compilation of technical documentation
  • Good organisational and logistical skills, the ability to liaise with internal departments, suppliers and customers at all levels
  • Streamlined communication channels for effective information exchange between departments.

Mechanical Design Draughtsman

Demaglass Technology
01.1997 - 01.1999
  • I worked as part of a small concurrent engineering design team, designing prototype machinery for the glass tableware and lighting industry
  • I was involved in the planning of design & development projects from the conceptual design phase through to the final design using the latest CAD software
  • I supervised a detailing team and dealt with any queries or problems
  • I was also responsible for the manufacture and assembly of the designed components and the monitoring of the project assembly against allocated budget
  • I also compiled the installation and maintenance manuals for the prototype equipment and ensured its continual development and viability

Engineering Workshop Technician

Demaglass Technology
01.1994 - 01.1997
  • I worked from engineering drawings to manufacture and assemble a variety of small components to large production line equipment for the glassware industry
  • This was a multi-skilled role, which required me to perform various tasks such as MIG welding, machining, fabrication, structural steelwork assembly, inspection of components etc
  • A further role was to become involved in the development of prototype equipment and regularly attend 'continuous improvement team' meetings with the design team, to discuss ways to improve the production equipment and techniques both on-site and overseas

Engineering Apprentice

Dema Glass Ltd
Chesterfield, Derbyshire
01.1989 - 01.1994
  • I completed a 4-year, full E.I.T.B accredited apprenticeship which covered a wide range of engineering skills including general bench fitting techniques, assembly and maintenance of process machinery, plant maintenance and breakdown procedures, hydraulic/pneumatic systems and basic electrical work
  • I successfully completed my training in 1994 and gained technician status NVQ Level 3
