My primary duties and responsibilities include:


  • Monitoring water levels at Toddbrook reservoir using CRT's Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and JBA (advanced forecasting software that models rainfall, flows and reservoir levels), and through visual inspection.
  • Completing critical monthly penstock/sluice manual override tests and refuelling the generator on a regular basis.
  • Operating the main scour valve underneath the dam to adjust the water level of the reservoir in line with set safe parameters.
  • Being available on standby / on-calls overnight to maintain safe water levels.
  • Liaising with colleagues, team leaders, volunteer team leads, CRT engineers, project managers, duty officers, and Keir contractors.


Other duties and responsibilities for the Macclesfield and Peak Forest team include:


  • Reactive work (canal breaches, sluice leaks, lock failures, animal and boat retrieval, fallen trees, environmental contamination).
  • Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPMs) on Trust assets (locks, culverts, weirs, bridges), and vegetation clearance on workboats.
  • Planned ZX notifications e.g. filling holes in towpaths, building fencing, hanging gates, tree limb sawing.
  • Routine work (water control of grids on feeders around the network, bin-store clearance, collecting materials and taking vehicles to and fro for maintenance).
