Two weeks of work Experience at Rhodar/Thermac Ltd
- 2 week work experience at Rhodar specialist enabling works, an asbestos removal company and Thermac hire ltd, an asbestos removal equipment manufacturer.
- The employees of each business are employed by Lexia solutions group, as they are two separate companies which are owned by the same people. This allows them to work together, enabling me to work in two different businesses in one work experience.
- In this period I spent time with the HRM, Procurement and Marketing departments.
- During time with HRM I learnt valuable people management and communication skills. I was taught how to deal with disciplinaries in the workplace, overseeing a number of disciplinary meetings and cases, as well as learning about employment law and how HR help to advise managers/employees in regards to this. I was also proactive with recruitment, which was a part of HRM in this business. It required using LinkedIn to seek and investigate the experience of a number of Senior quantity surveyors/site managers to interview for job vacancies within Rhodar.
- Time with Procurement was spent in Thermac, as stock control is a vital part of the business. This allowed me to see inventory management on a large scale. In this period I learnt how to purchase or reorder stock, process stock coming in, and manage the sale of stock. The companies system identified stock that need to be reordered, which I turned into a list. Then, I liaised with the stock control manager to decide whether it does/doesn't need to be ordered, depending on lead times and whether the stock is a fast mover or not. I also learnt how to process invoices for receipts and sales of stock and how to communicate appropriately with clients and suppliers in numerous situations, such as when updating clients with their orders and chasing overdue payments.
- With the marketing department in Rhodar I enhanced personal creative, research, design and interviewing skills. I helped to launch two news stories on the business' website, using a website tool whereby I could design the page in terms of layout, with photos and text to maximise engagement with the reader. I also used excel to create a list of competitor businesses within the industry which monitored their followers and activity on various social media platforms such as LinkedIn, Indeed, Instagram and Twitter. I gained vital research skills through a project where a list of various marketing expos/conferences were listed with details, dates and locations to help the department develop and potentially gain ideas from large corporations. In terms of business to business marketing, I was at the forefront of Rhodar's upcoming Christmas campaign. This involved the creation of three Rhodar-branded Christmas themed games, using a paid website template, to play on rotation, every three days during a two week period leading up to Christmas. This is available for employees, clients, family and friends and anyone who was interested to play. The idea was to have Rhodar branded gifts and also prizes to win daily for scoring the top points whilst playing the game. Rhodar branded gifts I created included, Laptop wallets/cases, Chilli water bottles, hoodies/quarter zip jumpers and phone/laptop chargers. Prizes included donations to charity of your choice, tickets to Leeds United/Rhinos matches, food/beauty hampers, tickets to music concerts and paid meals at restaurants. I helped develop this marketing campaign in order to boost Rhodar's performance in two ways: 1. Increase the professionalism of the company (Branded items will be given to all employees), as the people within the business will appear smart by wearing/using the branding. 2. Clients who receive items/gifts will be impacted positively by the presence of the business, whether it be a branded item in their house/work space or whether they have benefitted from a Rhodar paid experience.
- To summarise, the time I spent with Rhodar and Thermac gave me priceless experience and knowledge within a professional working environment, within an office and warehouse setting. Furthermore, my time spent with marketing helped me to gain my appetite for further work in this field, which I hope to achieve during my placement year of University.
