Summary

Firstly, I have completed the BS’c Adult Nursing program at the university of London Southbank (LSBU). While attending LSBU I was allocated to Croydon University Hospital Trust to complete my placement for the for the course.

While completing my placements in a variety of wards at Croydon university hospital. It has enabled me with the opportunity to understand how the NHS system configures into providing the best patient and staff care.

In 2021 I graduated from London Southbank university and I was employed at The Epsom St Helier trust in the new Cardiology unit in January 2022.

While working with the many diverse teams in the Epsom St Helier Trust it has enabled me to understand the many ways of team collaboration in terms of communicating with each other and patients to improve care therefore promoting innovation which is vital to the NHS as it is continuously evolving.

This had developed into a key element due to the ongoing staff shortages, winter pressure and the fact that as a shortage of hospital beds we would receive patients that were not in the direct care of the cardiac team but rather the medical team. therefore, further expanding my clinical knowledge and practise.

Which in addition, during my time in cardiology/respiratory department I have often taken the role and responsibility of the nurse in charge. Being tasked to lead the ward, this was a new and invigorating task I had not been required to perform before. By being placed in this position this would inevitably increase my leadership skills for the future and become more further involved in the patient care pathway within the multidisciplinary team. However. My main responsibility as nurse in charge was to prepare patients for their procedures involving angiograms and stents. This would be done by liaising with the different hospital trusts to prepare the hospital bed, booking the appropriate hospital transport and preparing their medical notes with medication charts.

As a member of the cardiology/respiratory department, I have completed my mandatory training and various courses online and within the education centre located within the trust. This includes Data Protection, Safeguarding Children, Health, Safety & Welfare, Infection Prevention & Control and fire safety. I have also a valid Manual Handling Certificate. Venepuncture, cannulation, ECG reading and Iv therapy passport

On my reflection of working within a wide range of ward-based care, I have achieved in improving my clinical knowledge and developing my skills in each clinical setting, further updating my competency in patient care. In addition, expanding my understanding of trust policy and working within it, as this can be used as a guide and where I can focus on further improvement and new limitations.

I have worked with many different specialities within the cardiology department and provide patient centred care. Communication is the key to making patients feel comfortable and aware of our procedures and I explain to patients what I am doing and rationale Working with different members of staff also requires good communication so I always keep other members of the team informed by sharing relevant information with them whilst being aware of maintaining confidentiality in accordance with information governance.

I am keen to attend further training to improve my skills as I feel that this would enable me to further my career and develop new skills.

I enjoyed working in the cardiology department due to the fast-paced environment, with many different patients needing varied treatments. Being part of the multidisciplinary team and having a busy roll to play keeps me motivated in working to my best ability. This gives me confidence that I have delivered the best care I can by putting the patient first.

I would enjoy being part of the team as I feel that I can offer someone who is, hardworking, consistent, caring, compassionate willing to learn and punctual. I enjoy working as part of a team and helping people wherever possible.

My inoculations are all current and up to date.

In 2023 I made the decision to take my clinical role further and joined the Olyan day centre unit at the Royal Marsden Hospital Sutton. I have found this field of care more immersive and more engrossed in providing care holistically which is why I have decided to direct my focus on the oncology department.

Within 1 year of joining, I had undertaken the Systemic anticancer therapy passport and have been signed competent to administer chemotherapy independently which I have been doing efficiently. I have also completed the courses for the manual use of the medical devices to administer chemotherapy, facilitated in the “Epic” course to operate the IT system that is used to view and control the patients file along with the entire unit’s patient list and lastly acces to patient port catheters.

along with the Royal Marsden education resources that are easily accessible. I have fortunately been provided guidance by my colleagues who have had individually over 10-20years experience in this field and have provided further education into understanding the pharmacokinetics and dynamics of the medication we administer daily along. This came as a great benefit to me as I was relatively new to this form of care and did not know where I should begin.
