I am creative and artistic. I have a certificate of Higher Education in Fashion Design (2nd year) from De Montfort University Leicester and have been studying Fashion design since secondary school and college. When studying fashion design in college, that is where I found my love for expressing my creativity. I found doing briefs exciting, I would be very self motivated when having to carry out research and creating mood boards / sketchbooks with sources that I found myself and then adding my own personal opinion and creative, innovative ideas. I loved doing work by myself and getting lost in my own creative bubble and being able to come up with inventive ideas that were all my own. On the other hand, when it came to working in groups I also found it interesting as it’s another chance to build new ideas. Working in textbooks and presenting them neatly was one of my favourite parts of the course. I love creating a story through my presentation. However, something I looked forward to the most was when we had knitting lessons on the industrial knitting machines. I loved learning the many different patterns that you could create, limitless opportunities with designs. I found it fascinating and something I would love to pursue in the future.
After University and during the lockdown I started to create my own jewellery as I wanted to try something new and keep busy! I set up my own Etsy shop and sold my jewellery on there. It was something I really enjoyed and with it being my own small business I had to make sure every order was packed correctly and to the right address. This definitely helped me with my attention to detail and how important it is to get every single feature to standard.
Currently, I have started to teach myself how to hand crochet which I have found really fun and exciting. I love having new hobbies and always learning new ways to be creative and expressing myself through it.
Since working as a childcare assistant I have learnt to work in a fast paced environment. Time management is also an important factor that I have definitely progressed with to an another level since working at the Nursery. Attention to detail at this job is absolutely necessary. Working with many different children, different ages ranging from 0-2, having to see how they are doing daily, if they are progressing, making good developments with their learning/talking/engagement etc.
During my time here I have developed strong skills in supporting young children and creating new, fun activities that will also help them gain new skills or help them with development. I have also gained excellent communication skills, working under pressure a lot of the time I have learnt how to stay calm and deal with situations in a professional manner whether if it's with children, parents or with other members of staff.
For a few months I was self employed looking after one lady with dementia. I originally worked for a small care business (Julie's Home Care Services) however they decided to pull out of the care with the lady I was caring for, which is when I decide to carry on and work for myself. I felt very dedicated to the lady I was looking after, we created a lovely bond and I didn't want to leave her and her family with no care. I was caring for my patient since December 2021 (when I first started with the care company). During this time we created a great bond, it was a very personal journey for the both of us as we saw each other almost everyday.
From the time that I spent with her, I experienced and learned a lot, everyday was different and you never knew how one day to another would go. Everyday I went in with an open mind, ready to handle whatever was to come.
This was my first full time job, which I found to be very rewarding and mind changing. I looked after 2 lovely ladies with Dementia, providing full time care in their homes. This job was very personal, we created bonds together and I learned everything about them and their personalities. This wasn't technically a “creative” job or something that I saw myself doing as my first career choice, however, I had to use new, inventive ideas to make them happy when they were anxious or sad and came up with daily activities to do tailored to their needs/ abilities.
I enjoyed coming up with new tasks to do every day whether it was crafts, going for a nice walk somewhere or baking.
This was my longest job roll that I did while also attending university. This job really helped me figure out my time management in the work place as well as studying on the side. My confidence definitely grew and developed while working here as I got to work with people of many different ages and personalities, which helped a lot with my communication.
Work experience -
I completed work experience at Boots during secondary school. Work experience really did help on building my social skills and showed an insight to what it’s like managing in a working environment. I worked here for 2 weeks where I got to use my creative skills when organising the shop and window displays.
