  • Responsible for caring for people in the community who have both well established, and new stomas. Includes care and maintenance of NG/PEG/RIG/PEGJ tubes and various types of enteral feeding.
  • My role is also heavily centred around training both patients and healthcare professionals (either in a home/cared home setting, or in a hospital setting) how to independently care and manage their stoma site and feeding tube, as well as provide detailed and thorough training on using the Freego enteral feeding pump.
  • Health promotion is pivotal for my patients, as is my ability to independently assess, diagnose and commence treatment in relation to stoma care and enteral feeding tubes.
  • Working in the community often means entering peoples homes as a lone worker, therefore risk assessment is of great importance, and I am consistent with cleanliness of myself and equipment, disposal of clinical waste and necessary PPE to maintain effective infection control.

  • Managing workload, multitasking and meeting timeframes are paramount to this role, as well as exceptional communication skills and the ability to establish rapport with claimants, many of whom find the assessment particularly challenging and often disengage.
