Work history

Student Quantity Surveyor

Martin and Hamilton Ltd
Ballymena, Mid and East Antrim
05.2025 - Current

During my placement as a Student Quantity Surveyor, I gained valuable hands-on experience across the full project lifecycle.

At Martin & Hamilton, the QS and Estimating teams were closely integrated, which gave me the opportunity to work across both functions. I assisted with tender enquiries, pricing computations, and figure analysis, which greatly improved my understanding of how project costs are built up and derived. I was also given the opportunity to complete takeoffs from drawings and successfully measured the internal finishes for a healthcare extension, for sending out to the supply chain for pricing, and evaluation of tenders returned.

This exposure allowed me to appreciate the link between estimating at pre-contract stage and cost management throughout delivery, strengthening both my technical knowledge and commercial awareness.

I was involved in compiling input to interim valuations and payment applications and seeing how they are fully presented, as well as monitoring project costs against budgets to identify potential risks and savings.

My role also exposed me to contract administration tasks, such as reviewing variations and supporting change control processes. In addition, I developed my understanding of procurement strategies, construction programs, and the importance of maintaining accurate records. I also shadowed the QS team on various occasions during meetings with stakeholders and members of the supply chain, which I found invaluable in learning how to communicate effectively and resolve problems or differences. This experience not only strengthened my technical knowledge but also enhanced my communication and teamwork skills, as I worked closely with project managers, site teams, and subcontractors.
