Defining Project Success: A Success donor.

Abstract

This piece of research is an attempt to apply part of the study undertaken by Thomas and Fernandez, (2008) to a selection of participants from Investment Management companies in Scotland. It outlines the findings from several mini case studies, conducted using semi-structured interviews of program and project managers in four different investment management companies. The main aim was to determine whether they defined success criteria for projects and subsequently measured it, and whether the exercise of defining success actually contributed to the overall success of the project. The findings gathered are used to gain an understanding of whether defining project success contributes to success.
The ultimate goal is to identify whether a relationship exists between project definition and success, for the Scottish Investment Management Companies as defined by Thomas and Fernandez, (2008). The purpose is to determine whether Scottish Investment Management companies who take the time to define success criteria upfront reap the benefit of success in the end.
