• Checks patient in holding bay and the file including consent properly filled up and medical investigation results are readily available.
• Provides safety, psychological and emotional support to the patient.
• Coordinates with scrub nurse and OR Team when patient is ready for intervention.
• Monitors aseptic practices to avoid breaks in techniques coordinating movements of personnel assisting in the operation.
• Monitors patient and documents specific activities throughout the operative procedure to ensure safety and prevent complications.
• Assists to the need of the scrub nurse and delivers sterile items on the sterile field.
• Ensures cleanliness and disinfection of the area after operation and patient is transferred to the recovery room. • After-cleaning/ disinfection of equipment to be ready for next use.
Set up sterile table observing principles of surgical asepsis. • Prepares sutures, ligatures, instruments, and equipment needed for operation.
• Assists the surgeon and assistant surgeon during the operation and anticipating the required instruments, sponges, drains, and other equipment to be handed to the surgeon as required.
• Counts needles, sponges, and instruments before start of operation and before closing patient’s operated site to ensure nothing is left inside the operated site.
Counter-checks charges done by the Circulating Nurse to ensure completeness and accuracy.
• Prepares surgical instruments and supplies to be used during each operation.
• Completes supplies, fluids and drugs in the OR suites after each procedure.
• Assists in operations either as an Instrument Nurse or Circulating Nurse, and in other diagnostic procedures.
• As a Circulating Nurse, observes the progress of surgery, providing additional instruments, supplies and other items needed.
• Observes and assesses patients during surgical procedures for the presence of cyanosis or alterations in the vital signs and hemorrhage, etc.
• Preserves and labels specimens obtained during surgery and sends to the laboratory for hispathologic examination. • Takes care of medico-legal specimens taken from the patient and endorses it to the Head Nurse.
• Cleans or directs cleaning and sterilization of OR instruments, equipment and supplies, the care and storage of delicate instruments, the cleaning of contaminated OR areas, instruments and equipment and the care of infected linen for disposal.
• Makes surgical supplies and packs instruments for sterilization, ready for the next use.
• Provides all-encompassing pre-operative nursing care. • Provides inclusive nursing care to all newly operated patients.
• Completes supplies, fluids and drugs in the OR suites after each procedure
• Assess patients prior to surgery (e.g. NPO status) and alleviate their concerns
• Gather all supplies needed for the operation
• Assume responsibility of keeping the operating room sterilized
• Position and prepare patient on operating table
• Pass medical instruments or other objects to the surgeon during operation
