SUMMARY OF JOB ROLES:
Responsibilities: 1) Daily care of inpatients admitted to the Plastic Surgery Wards and Burns wards and ITU (our critical area for the
severely burned patients.) 2) Care of patients in the out-patient department most of whom presented for follow-up of chronic
conditions. 3) Care of surgical patients arriving at our Accident and Emergency Department. 4) Care of patients transferred to our
department from the peripheral hospitals. 5) Training of new interns.
Duties: 1) Review and examination of patients particularly in the early post-operative period. 2) Writing of patient notes and
requests. 3) Writing of transfer requests and referral letters. 4) Performance of procedures including but not limited to the following:
a) Local keloid, cyst and lump excisions. b) Basic cranio-facial reconstruction following trauma. c) Skin Grafting. d) Local Skin Flaps.
e) Involved care of the severely burned patients.
Looked after all the surgical patients in both emergency and eletive settings, together with the appointed Consultant General Surgeon.
Undertook the post of sole Specialty Doctor in the Surgery Department of MSJMC and provided the necessary coverage through a
variety of monthly rotations including: General & Trauma Surgery, MIS/Bariatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Vascular Surgery,
Orthopaedic Surgery, ENT Surgery, Neurosurgery and Transplant Surgery.
Rotated under the auspices of the General Surgery Department of the DMC & HRH through a variety of monthly rotations including:
Acute Care & Trauma Surgery (Primarily), MIS/Bariatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, and Thoracic Surgery.
Formal training residency undertaken in General Surgery. Mandatory preliminary training rotations undertaken in Orthopaedics, Urology, Neurosurgery, Paediatric Surgery and Cardithoracic Surgery as required by the Program Directorship.
This post was undertaken to facilitate sponsorship by Ministry of Health in Jamaica for specialty experience in Plastic Surgery at the Mount Sinai Hospital, as a formal training residency in Plastic Surgery was not available at this time.
Matured in proficiency in the core reconstructive and cosmetic/aesthetic procedures (outside of complex craniofacial and microsurgical procedures) performed for the patients unique to this specialty in both elective and emergency settings.

Upon completion of my internship I opted to rotate for 6 months through the department of Anesthesia and Intensive Care as a
Senior House Officer.
Responsibilities: 1) Daily assessment of pre-operative patients for surgery. 2) OR rounds and daily drug inventories. 3) Daily ICU
rounds with evening patient reviews. 4) Patient assessment post-operatively prior to their return to the surgical wards.
Duties: 1) Daily induction of General Anesthesia for pediatric and adult patients in both emergent and elective settings. 2) Weekly
rotations through the various specialties and their surgical lists to gain exposure to the various types of anesthesia for eg. paediatric
anesthesia vs obstetric anesthesia vs ophthalmic anesthesia. 3) Performance of procedures inclusive of but not limited to the
following:
a) Management and optimization of patients on cardiopulmonary support. b) Placement of central lines. c) Spinal and epidural
anesthesia. d) Regional nerve blocks.
