Work history

Manufacturing Engineering Apprentice

Yamazaki Mazak UK Ltd.
Worcester
09.2012 - 09.2015
  • The first year of training was at Worcester Group Training Association developing skills including manual milling, manual turning, CNC turning, 2D CAD, 3D CAD, MIG welding, and bench fitting, which led to the completion of a Level 3 NVQ extended diploma in mechanical manufacturing engineering.
  • The second year was spent onsite at Mazak, on rotation in the machining department under various process engineers whereby I had learned where I wanted to position myself moving forward.
  • I got assigned in the Jig centre, where I was responsible for machining high-accuracy components. I quickly took responsibility for programming some new parts coming through and also being involved in the CMM inspection of these parts. These efforts led me to a subsequent move to FH-line as Team Leader.

Machining Team leader

Yamazaki Mazak UK Ltd.
Worcester
09.2015 - 07.2017
  • My role was overseeing the operations of 2 x E-towers, a Variaxis palletech, 5 x FH-8800 on a FMS Line, a tool hive tool room, and having responsibility for a team of 8 - 10 engineers. This mainly involved scheduling new parts to achieve production requirements, liaising with the raw materials department, holding daily TENKO meetings to ensure feedback between colleagues and the machining supervisor, programming of new parts, making changes to existing parts, resolving machining-specific issues from parts that had come from the FH-line, and creating processes to ensure these issues did not re-occur.
  • Throughout this time, I reviewed the machining processes and strategies of the commonly machined components to free up capacity on the line. This resulted in bringing sub-contracted work back in-house and freeing up other departments that were at the time a bottleneck to production.

CNC Applications Engineer - UK Based

Yamazaki Mazak UK Ltd.
Worcester
07.2017 - 01.2024
  • Provide pre-sales support, including machine demonstrations, technical presentations, special cuts, new machine demonstrations, and exhibitions. Also post-sale support, including onsite customer support, turnkey projects, troubleshooting, post-processor development, and training.
  • Involvement in turnkey projects, liaising and organising effectively with associated suppliers, programming of parts, and working with customer engineers to prove operations and component accuracy pre-machine delivery. Involvement in post-machine delivery to ensure a smooth transition and that parts are being produced to the customer's standards. Troubleshoot any issues that may arise, make improvements where required, and ongoing support when required.
  • Effectively deliver demonstrations and hands-on technical support, showcasing the capabilities of the machine/s to new and existing customers.
  • Deliver remote technical support to troubleshoot and resolve issues related to machine performance, operational challenges, and technical issues.
  • Work closely with the sales team to understand customer requirements and propose the appropriate machine platform, tooling, work-holding, and software in the form of an engineering summary. Once this has been established, propose process methodology, estimated cycle time, and CAD/CAM detail. This can involve presenting the information to the customer for further discussion and understanding.
  • Development of post-processors, programs, and macros to optimise CNC machine performance and adapt to specific customer requirements.
  • Perform machine testing and fine-tuning to optimise performance and ensure kinematic compliance.
  • Responsibility for producing new machine demonstrations for internal and/or external exhibitions in the UK and Europe, showcasing new machine technologies and industry trends. I would involve tool representatives, work-holding representatives, and robot manufacturers if required. I would develop new CAD models and CAM sessions, alongside running instructions for transparency.
