Work History

Mechanical fitter

Tata Steel UK

09.2001 - Current

I started my career with Tata Steel (formally Corus) in September 2001 as a mechanical engineering apprentice. During this time I completed an NVQ level 2 in performing engineering operations and an NVQ level 3 in engineering production at Bridgend collage. I also completed a City and Guilds level 3 in engineering installation commissioning and maintenance.

Other noticeable achievements from my apprenticeship include winning the Freddie Robert's memorial award for the best mechanical apprentice across Tata Steel UK. And completing the 12 week Princes trust volunteer program with the aim of helping young people from disadvantaged communities by supporting them to build confidence and learn new skills.

Upon completing my 4 year apprenticeship I was transferred to the Blast Furnace department at Tata Steel Port Talbot which is classed by the HSE as a tier 1 COMAH site. I have since served as a mechanical fitter since 2005 and been the lead mechanical hand on shift for the last 12 years. My daily tasks have included -

  • Inspecting equipment regularly to identify potential issues and recommend preventive measures.
  • Responded promptly to breakdowns, applying troubleshooting skills to identify and resolve mechanical issues efficiently.
  • Re assembling mechanical equipment under complex conditions
  • Risk assessing and writing safe working procedures for daily tasks
  • Fluid power isolations to put the plant in a safe condition for contractor teams to carry out maintenance
  • Installed and commissioned new equipment for smooth integration into existing systems.
  • Have experience in driving telescopic forklifts, mobile elevated working platforms and have basic level knowledge of slinging band lifting
