Personal Statement: Application for People Partner Role
Executive Summary
With nearly 30 years of experience in the education sector and over a decade in senior leadership, I bring a deep understanding of people-focused leadership, change management, safeguarding, and performance development. As an Assistant Head and SENCo working across schools within an Academy Trust, I have led high-performing teams, navigated complex restructures, and contributed to strategic growth. My experience directly aligns with the core responsibilities of a People Partner: building trust, enhancing culture, delivering organisational development, and driving positive employee experiences.
Professional Background in Education and Leadership
I began my career as a class teacher in Southwest London and have since worked across both state and private sectors in Hampshire. Over the past eleven years, I have moved into strategic leadership roles, currently serving as Assistant Head and SENCo across two primary schools.
I played a key role in our Federation’s expansion into an Academy Trust, managing SEN provision across four schools while supporting Heads of School, the Executive Leader, and CFO. My leadership contributed to securing ‘Outstanding’ and ‘Good’ Ofsted ratings in four recent inspections.
Strategic Leadership and People Management
In my capacity as Assistant Head, I contribute to senior-level decisions involving recruitment, performance reviews, capability assessments, and professional development. I lead change management processes with a strong emphasis on clear communication, empathy, and transparency: qualities that are essential for a successful People Partner.
My role also involves mentoring Early Career Teachers and supporting experienced staff with targeted coaching and development plans. This work has required balancing operational demands with long-term strategic goals for team growth and performance.
HR and Organisational Development Experience
Working closely with our Executive Head and CEO, I’ve been involved in planning Trust-level staffing structures and in presenting our recent bid for a new school to the local authority. This experience included budgeting, forecasting, and workforce planning as key components of organisational development and strategic partnership.
Safeguarding and Inclusive Practice
As Designated Safeguarding Lead, I manage confidential information and have led staff training across five schools. I facilitate multi-agency collaboration and am responsible for overseeing the welfare of our most vulnerable pupils. In my role as Designated Teacher, I also track progress and the impact of funding for pupils with SEND and those in care.
Culture Building and Stakeholder Engagement
I regularly lead training for staff, present to parents, and coordinate workshops with external partners, including Winchester University. I work closely with PTAs, governors, and trustees to foster a positive and connected school culture.
Conclusion
I see the People Partner role as a natural next step: allowing me to apply my leadership and people management experience in a broader organisational context. I am passionate about empowering teams, navigating change with compassion, and driving high-impact initiatives that support both people and performance. I would welcome the opportunity to bring these skills to your organisation.
