Autism Diagnostician

NHS Highland
Nairn, Highland
2023.11 - Current

Continue to offer diagnostic assessments for community mental health team patients, who are having difficulty availing themselves of identified treatments for their mental health challenges because of undiagnosed autism. Our MDT was successful in suggesting a test of change because we noticed that some of our patients were being failed by services, purely because their undiagnosed neurodevelopmental condition made existing group-based interventions inaccessible. I mainly use the autism clinical interview for adults (ACIA) and it has been a helpful tool with regards to helping patients access the appropriate services when they need them. I continue to advise my MDT colleagues on all matters related to autism.

Background

I am a father of twin 17 year olds who are autistic, and I myself am autistic. I am positive about the contributions autistic people can make in all facets of society. I have a profound understanding of the environmental challenges experienced by autistic people, because my sons experience it , and I have done so too. I do not know it all, and I find I learn something new from every patient contact I have. It has made me a determined advocate for autistic people, but also more widely, for people with neuro-developmental conditions and comorbid mental health problems.
