Lead Emergency Dispatcher

Qatar Shell GTL
Ras Laffan, Qatar
01.2013 - 08.2013
  • I was employed by Qatar Shell to facilitate the set-up of the new Medical & Fire Emergency Operations Centre
  • Using emergency experience gleaned from my UK emergency service experience, I was able to design and implement a call taking triage system based on AMPDS (Advanced Medical Priority Dispatch System) in the form of action cards suitable for the plant operations, train team members to use radio telephony (with appropriate language and protocols being followed) and to coach and support the team through complex incident scenarios both on and offshore.
  • As the Lead Dispatcher I maintained 24/7 callout responsibility, dealing with emergent and non-emergent calls from all levels of staff within Qatar Shell across the country
  • Provide 24/7 emergency coverage to the Qatar Shell GTL plant, Pearl 1 & 2 platforms including vessels, staff accommodation, Doha offices, and any emergency scenarios involving Qatar Shell staff within Qatar
  • Part of the Incident Command Team for major and Tier 2 and 3 incidents
  • Update Emergency Response documents as necessary
  • Lead and support a team of 6 Emergency Dispatchers including recruitment of new team members
  • Create operational rosters (including Incident Command Team) and manage Annual Leave to ensure appropriate shift manning including maternity and sickness monitoring
  • Use TETRA Radios, CCTV, ‘Red Lines' (emergency call line), and VHF/UHF channels
  • Answer emergency calls and dispatch the First Intervention Team/Medical Emergency Response Team as required, notifying relevant outside agencies if the need arose, and ‘standing up' the Incident Command Teams upon Tier escalation

Emergency Medical Dispatcher

South Western Ambulance Service Trust
St Leonards, United Kingdom
06.2008 - 09.2012
  • 999 emergency call-taker for the ambulance service
  • Working at SWAST provided me with many development opportunities and challenges including but not limited to: qualifications in Basic Life Support and the use of the AMPDS triage system. I learned to proactively listen whilst assertively taking control of high-pressure situations with oftentimes frightened and distressed callers
  • Professionalism was expected throughout and protocol adherence was imperative at all times in an incredibly disciplined environment
  • Answering 999 calls commanded a level of control within oneself: being able to manage personal emotions whilst on a call was paramount to a much wanted successful outcome
  • I was often selected to perform other non-routine duties within the service including the set-up of Command and Control Rooms for major incidents, training new recruits, guiding them during their induction and mentoring through their probationary periods, and I also spent time ‘on the road' with crew to see what their job entailed
  • Discretion, tact, flexibility and the ability to adapt were all essential personality traits of a call taker
  • Answer emergency 999 calls using AMPDS (Advanced Medical Priority Dispatch System)
  • Extract specific information from callers regarding location and the nature of the emergency, and dispatch resources accordingly
  • Provide emergency life saving advice expeditiously, updating Dispatch with important information received during the call
  • Use calming techniques to achieve the best possible outcome for caller and patient
  • Operate radio equipment (ICCS) and liaise with ‘road' staff, informing them of updates or job alterations, including patient progress/deterioration
  • Ensure vehicle response time targets are tracked and met
  • Prioritising the emergency workload and re-prioritising where required
  • Strategic co-ordination of vehicles and ‘road' staff positioning around the county
