I started working at the Walk-in Doctor’s Surgery when it first opened in June 2009. I thoroughly enjoyed the role and took phone calls, sent faxes to other surgeries and greeted and signed in patients, from locals who couldn’t get an appointment at their own surgery, to people working or visiting Bournemouth on holiday. I had a great rapport with the Nurse Practitioners who asked me to move with them when the surgery moved next door on a weekend only basis.
I was the first nurse to work in the Pacemaker Theatre and worked alongside Surgeons, Cardiologists and Radiographers. My role was to set up, stock and clean the theatre prior to the 3 operations performed each afternoon Monday to Friday. I stayed with the patient, giving reassurance throughout the procedure as it was done under local anaesthetic. Prior to the operation, I gave the patient an ecg and connected them up to the heart monitor.
I worked alongside the Midwives, helping new mums with breastfeeding, demonstrated bathing new babies and I tagged the babies coming over from Poole Hospital so mums and babies could spend some time resting at Bournemouth Hospital. I cleaned Delivery Suites and re-stocked them, and I answered the telephone on the unit and helped with filing.
I was the first Health Care Assistant to work at Southbourne Surgery. I admitted all patients to the surgery and I performed pill checks, Ecg’s and did did most blood tests for the surgery. I held a weekly blood pressure clinic and helped the doctor with administrative duties when required.
I was a Student Nurse at Cheltenham General Hospital and worked on a variety of wards to include the Emergency Department, Surgical, Medical, Orthopaedic, Elderly and Paediatric wards. I passed all practical exams taken and was preparing to take my final exam leaving prematurely due to being pregnant with my second child.
