Supporting information

I started my career as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) with the West Yorkshire Ambulance service on the 6th November 2000. As a call taker, I was responsible for the 999 Calls that came into the emergency call centre that needed to be answered immediately as a matter of priority by the first available EMD. I also answered urgent ambulance request calls and general inquiries, which must also be handled professionally. This is a very busy environment and required me to work quickly, accurately, remain focused, calm, courteous, and respectful whilst being able to communicate with members of the public in what was at times extremely very stressful, emotional, and sensitive situations. Whilst also ensuring to log all essential details about the patient's condition, the exact location, etc onto a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system The EOC is usually the public's first point of contact with the ambulance service. It was therefore very important for me to create the right impression so that the callers are in no doubt that they are dealing with a professional & caring service. Our purpose is to save lives and ensure that everyone receives the right care, whenever, and wherever they need it. I always strived to give the caller help, advice, and support as I was mindful that many of these callers were emotionally distressed so I made it my mission to gain their trust and confidence to allow me to send out the correct response at the right time to the right place. Doing this allowed me to develop good communication skills whilst producing good written information.

I continued my progression within YAS by following my heart and going out on the road to offer one-to-one hands-on care to the members of the public. I became a PCA ( Primary Care Assistant ) dealing with GP urgent and hospital transfers. My personal development continued and I trained to be an Advanced Practitioner and then an EMT1, I worked alongside Paramedics, Emergency Care Assistants, and other Emergency Medical Technicians Levels 1 & 2 in their assessment, treatment, and transportation of all A&E patients. I also had to undertake emergency driving duties on all types of vehicles operated by the Trust, safely and appropriately as this required good observation skills and confidence when out on the busy roads and especially in Emergencies. As with any YAS role I had to be proficient and knowledgeable in observing safe practices as laid down within the Trust's policies, procedures, and instructions to respond, treat and transport all categories of patients in line with the agreed scope of practice for the role. I gained confidence when I was expected to work alone and had to think on my feet in difficult and chaotic situations whilst my crew mate had to deal with other situations required of them. I could complete all documentation as required by the Trust, e.g. Patient Report Forms, Incident Reports, Datix, Accident Books, and/or any other information relating to Quality Monitoring whilst ensuring patient and staff confidentiality at all times.

I have worked shifts most of my career so I'm familiar with rota's and how quickly they can change due to last-minute sickness or changes in circumstances etc, so when there were times I was asked to change a shift or move to another station I was always happy to do so, showing enthusiasm, having a positive attitude at all times, and adapting to change at the last minute even if this was moving to a weekend shift or bank holiday as this was at times where the demand was required.

Between September 2019- May 2020 I took up my duties of EOC Scheduling Co-ordinator. My main responsibilities were to ensure the effective use of staffing resources and to meet staffing demand based on the forecast figures that were supplied to us weekly via the Capacity Team. I had to learn new systems and skills but with the support and patience of my colleagues, I became familiar with using GRS, ESR, portal, and Intraday which I needed to refer to when doing EMD planning. I responded to and assisted with all manner of queries from staff and management, about such things as annual leave, overtime, training, sickness reporting, abstractions for training and various other reasons, and many other matters.

I found myself having to prioritize my work and ensure that tasks were met and management reports were sent on time. This meant that I had to be self-motivated and work effectively individually and as part of a team yet not find myself unable to ask for help and assistance where needed.

Despite having a lot to learn in such a short time I felt I was able to remain positive, self-motivated, and developed a commitment and enthusiasm for any changes as part of a team and individual development.

My time on the road has meant I was in constant contact with members of the public, whom I treat equally and as individuals inclusively irrespective of their gender and cultural background. I have learnt to deal with difficult, sensitive and threatening situations that I have come across. I consistently respond in a calm, confident and safe manner. I have had to deal with sensitive information and incidents and make sound, quick decisions whilst remaining focused at all times.

I worked and have experience in working in a care home for a short period of time, I looked after residents who had severe dementia, Alzheimer's and learning difficulties, the day could be challenging but also rewarding as i strived to make a difference to their daily routine and ensure their needs were met. This experience means I am comfortable and feel I have gained knowledge and understanding of being able to communicate well with patients who may have mental health and or physical & learning difficulties in an appropriate and professional manner. I feel that such patients would find me to be patient, caring and considerate. This knowledge and understanding of the importance of effective communication enables me to maximise patient care.

Throughout my time with YAS I have demonstrated integrity, understanding, and ability to communicate effectively and work under pressure in all my former roles and maintain confidentiality and handling of sensitive issues both operationally while dealing directly with patients and within EOC and other YAS departments ensuring I can use my initiative and be self-motivated to allow me to work unsupervised or with minimal supervision.

I am honest, kind, focused, reliable and a proactive self-learner, through support, dedication, and organization, I feel that my achievements prove my ability to face new challenges and i feel I can bring years of experience to your team dealing with young and old alike and ensure they receive the best care and respect they so rightly deserve. I look forward to joining your team as a senior Care Assistant and embracing new challenges whilst working in a patient focused environment.

Health Desk Clinical Hub
06.2020 - Current

Job overview

The main duties of my role are to accurately process referrals from ambulance crews, NHS 111, clinical hub advisors, EOC advisors, YAS safeguarding team and social workers for the following:

Falls, social care, safeguarding vulnerable adults, safeguarding children and also SUDIC ( sudden unexpected deaths ), epilepsy, hypoglycaemia, alcohol, drugs and substance misuse.

There is a direct crew line to the health desk for operational staff whilst on the road. The line is opened through the EOC Clinical Hub and is given options to select which is relevant for their requirements. We also take overflow calls for the Clinical Duty Manager and Clinical advisors. Since qualifying as an Urgent Call Taker I am now able to access the C3 system and log any overflow call that come in for the crew call backs, GP bookings Embrace bookings, hospital transfers and other professionals , plus following up queries regarding previously booked jobs.

I also assist the clinical navigator by passing jobs that come into the emergency room that could be relevant for other professional services to deal with such as district nurses, GP's advanced medical practitioners, urgent care response teams, local care direct and falls teams.

I deal with very sensitive and complex cases of safeguarding referrals, liaising on a day to day basis with other social care professionals for the needs and requirements of vulnerable adults and children. In this role, I also have to log and report to the right authorities when a child's death is called in. It is highly important that as a team for any referral we must ensure all parts of the document are filled in correctly, accurately, and with detailed information as this is a legal document and will be used in coronary court.

Working in this role and EOC can be highly pressured at time and requires the ability to be patient and flexible, especially as the nature of the calls we take is often regarding distressing situations. As such this role shows that I am comfortable with busy phones, balancing a varied and constantly changing workload, and having to speak with different colleagues from different parts of the wider YAS team constantly.
