Management and Research

  • 2014 I organised and attended an Academy of Medical Educators (AoME) seminar on February 7th 2014 and have applied to be a Member of the Academy of Medical Educators.
  • 2014 I have led on a number of new teaching initiatives in Surgery. I have developed the Surgical Curriculum for Undergraduates being taught Surgery and this has led to a change in documentation for undergraduates. I have written a new Surgery Study Guide for undergraduates which is now in situ and is currently being considered for Medicine, and the other rotations in the final year at Nottingham.
  • 2014 SIPS "Staff Improving Patient Safety" - I am one of the executive four doctors who have set up SIPS at Nottingham University Hospitals. This is a group of frontline staff that use audit and evidence based medicine to make trust wide changes. We are supported by the medical director and have been incorporated into Board Structure.
  • 2012-15 Principal Investigator of PRIMO (Proactive Risk Monitoring in Healthcare) at Lincoln County Hospital, funded by the Health Foundation with a grant of £14811. I lead a team of a research nurse, two foundation doctors and a core surgical trainee developing this approach to predict and prevent problems and engaging staff to contribute towards an enhanced safety culture.
  • 2021 Senior Registrar Educational Lead, Northern General Hospital Sheffield for General Surgery

Teaching

  • 2009 -2015 I was employed to teach Medical Students at the University of Nottingham, delivering ward based teaching, small group sessions, workshops and individual teaching. I was a formal assessor for Nottingham University. As an F1 I attended the two day Teaching Improvement Programme System (TIPS) course in November 2009 and the one day Teaching Applied Clinical Skills (TACS) in January 2010. I taught on the Finals Orientated OSCE Training (FOOT) scheme where foundation year one doctor mentor and teach a group of seven or eight final medical students.
  • 2010 - 2015 As a member of faculty at the Trent Simulation Centre I established Core Surgical Trainees Advanced Simulation Training which first ran in 2013. This new course was designed and instigated from scratch and then funded by the East Midlands Deanery and included as part of the educational curriculum for Core Surgical Trainees. It continues in 2014. I was regular faculty on medical student, foundation (F1 and F2) and Core Medical Trainees training and was an invited member of faculty on the inaugural Operating Department Practioner (ODP) course using state of the art technology for acute scenarios in a safe simulated environment.
