During my second year at Barton Peveril College, I completed a week of work experience at NATS as part of my Extended Cambridge Certificate in Engineering. I began in the Navigational Aids department, learning about aircraft beacons and the Auto Triangulation system for locating aircraft in emergencies. I then explored the Radar Processing and Display Equipment used by Air Traffic Controllers and spent time with the Cyber Security Team, gaining insights into Project Management. I looked into Voice Communications Systems and toured the NATS Swanwick Operational Air Traffic Control Centre. After completing a course to assess air traffic controller abilities, I conducted an actual flight simulation with the RAF 78th Squadron. I also examined future aviation technologies and received positive feedback on my skills, attending follow-up visits to Heathrow and Southampton Airports.
