When it comes to improving sports performance my training methodology can be broken into 3 main components.
The foundational component is injury prevention. It is remiss of a trainer to train an athlete focusing only on their strength and power development, without regard to their biomechanics, mobility ranges and capability of their joints to withstand such training and to withstand the demands of their sport. It is short-sighted. Injuries are the main obstruction to progress, causing the athlete to potentially take months off of their training, therefore injury prevention is always at the forefront of my client's training.
Improving mobility is also a vital component to training any individual. Limited mobility hinders proper technique, increases chances of injury and decreases a client's quality of life, especially as they age. Improving a client's mobility is one of the first things I consider when assessing a new client, and this is achieved through dynamic and weighted mobility training, paying attention to the newest research when it comes to stretching and mobility.
Once a foundation of strong joints and mobility is created, then can an athlete undertake strength, power and athletic training utilising compound lifts, plyometrics and hypertrophy(muscle building) training. Due to the strong foundation that we've already built, my clients see rapid growth in this phase, accelerating their sports performance.
By following these principles my clients have been able to come back to sport following injuries, make significant improvements in their game performance, and remain clients for a long time due to their satisfaction with their training and injury prevention.
