  • The role of the DSM is busy and varied
  • When on duty I am responsible for the overall operational running of Clapham Junction, one of the busiest stations in the UK
  • Responsibility for station safety, security, customer experience and train performance (the on-time running of services) during the shift
  • Management of a large frontline team (including recruitment, training and development, attendance and performance management)
  • Taking the role of station incident officer (SIO) in the event of any major incident, including fatalities
  • This role involves leadership and direction of the frontline team during an incident, including ensuring the welfare of all team members is maintained
  • The SIO also liaises with other agencies including the emergency services
  • Investigating accidents and operational incidents, including making recommendations for improvements
  • Conducting periodic safety inspections in different areas of the station and reporting and escalating faults and hazards
  • Conducting risk assessments for a variety of activities
  • Managing relationships with a variety of stakeholders, including Network Rail, other train operators, the British Transport Police and the local authority
  • Dealing with customer complaints and enquiries as escalated to me by the frontline team
  • There are currently a series of station enhancement projects taking place across the station and this requires the DSM team to ensure contractors are working safely and that the works do not impact on the customer experience or the safe operation of the station
