Work History

Volunteer teaching assistant

Weobley High School
Weobley, Herefordshire
06.2023 - 06.2023
  • I took a short hiatus in 2023 to undertake work experience as a teaching assistant at a local secondary school, assisting in the history department. During the week, we participated in an Archaeological excavation called ‘The Big Dig’. Professional archaeologists led this local initiative to uncover and preserve historical artefacts. The school was a part of the project primarily because there is a medieval road running through the campus leading to the site of Snodhill Castle. My mentor allowed me to lead part of the archaeological work and assist history students with this project. During this time, I helped the students with the archaeological practice of collecting finds and ensuring bags were labelled and alphabetised correctly. I also ensured the students followed the precise instructions from professional and experienced archaeologists. Being given the role of leader greatly enhanced my skills in communication, leadership and teamwork. Throughout the dig, we faced several problems with tools breaking or being too big to work in a confined space, so I had to problem-solve and find solutions to allow the excavation to proceed. This allowed me to develop my analytical and problem solving skills.
  • When not on the dig site I assisted the lead teachers in lessons; helping them prepare educational materials and preparing the classrooms to make sure there was a high level of student productivity and minimum disruption. When the students asked me questions about the work, I worked with them and helped them complete the work to the best of their ability.
