Personal Care Assistant

Karen and Andy Wade
Cheshire West and Chester, Cheshire
06.2020 - 08.2021
  • Personal assistant to Karen to support her day-to-day needs, Karen had Motor neurons disease and was 7 years into her diagnosis. I came to Karen when she had lost her voice and from the neck down loss of nearly all movement. Initially it was assisting with all aspects of personal care, utilisation of a Peg to administer medication required daily. Showering, toilet, dressing and provide her with fluids and food that had to be slippery in order to swallow effectively as dyspraxia had started. Monitoring eating in case of choking, concentration whilst eating was important. I made sure no food or saliva was on her face at any time always keeping on top it for her dignity. Also ensuring any drinks that would come out of the right side of her mouth would not sit on her chest to avoid damp patches, minimising chances of chest infections.
  • I obtained Peg training, first aid training tailored for Karen by the local authority. Cough assist knowledge and use. I sat in on meetings with OT’s discussing Karen's needs with any changes with her MND. As my time progressed with Karen, we discussed at length the use of a sling and hoist, which we did then bring into her care plan. This was hard for Karen as she was so proud, she did not want it to define her. It helped her husband as I could implement the sling alot more, for transfer from the stair lift to hoist to her shower chair. Then progressed from the shower chair dressed to her wheelchair once her confidence grew and she felt safe with me I have to say it was an amazing moment. Ensuring Karen’s neck did not drop forward was paramount to protect her spinal cord, slow controlled movements using neck collars to keep alignment were used. We tackled many obstacles on being the neck brace, how comfortable they were, the feeling of choking in them. I researched many and came across 'Head up' made in Sheffield using a special fabric to let heat escape, there were different shaped panels that heated up I could manipulate to make a specific brace for Karen's neck. I actually measured her and my neck we were the same so I could make it on me to save her neck muscles obviously it's a process that could tire Karen out even more. I helped sort out paper work for the carers files, updated personal files alongside Karen. Karen was always cold so before her shower I would heat up towels for her before and after her shower which was a big hit...I think we had about 6 hot water bottles on the go during winter! Karen had a motorised wheelchair with front and back controls which I became proficient in using. I could change the seat settings to suit Karen's needs just by her eye movements I knew I had it right, ensuring her leg strap was always on and she was always how she wanted to be. Karen spoke to by using her computer which was amazing, which I have good knowledge of how to use.
  • Sadly, we lost Karen 2 weeks ago. I want to keep working and further develop my skill set within the caring field and want to learn more across the board within Special needs, disabilities across the board.
