Homelessness Prevention and Rough Sleeper Support

Booth Centre
Manchester, Cheetham Hill
10.2024 - Current

At the Booth Centre, I support entrenched rough sleepers and individuals experiencing multiple exclusion homelessness, offering a person-centred and holistic approach tailored to each individual's needs. I take the time to listen, build trust, and empower people to take positive steps forward.

  • As part of my role, I place Street Link referrals for those who wish to alert the local authorities that they are currently rough sleeping.
  • I signpost individuals to appropriate external agencies depending on their needs — for example, Centrepoint for rough sleepers under 25, or the Greater Manchester Immigration Aid Unit (GMIAU) for those requiring immigration advice and support. Collaboration through multi-disciplinary working is key to my role, as it ensures that individuals receive cohesive and comprehensive support from various services, helping to address the multiple, interconnected challenges they may face.
  • In addition, I help run a benefits drop-in service, where I assist service users in navigating the often complex benefits system. This can include support with Universal Credit accounts, Disability Living Allowance applications / Personal Independant Payments, and more. Collaboration through multi-disciplinary working is key to my role, as it ensures that individuals receive cohesive and comprehensive support from various services, helping to address the multiple, interconnected challenges they may face.

In this role, I coordinate and support a team of volunteers to provide hot meals, essential supplies, to those that are sleeping on the streets. we can distribute over 100 meals in one night alongside hot and cold drinks. I provide a welcoming presence to people experiencing homelessness across the city. I help plan outreach sessions, ensure safeguarding practices are followed, and promote a respectful, non-judgemental approach when engaging with individuals on the streets. In addition to frontline support, I actively raise awareness around homelessness by managing our social media presence and organising pop-up events, which help to engage the wider community, challenge stigma, and encourage support for those most in need.
