Electrical Team Leader
Yamazaki (UK) Machine Tools
Worcester
01.1986 - 01.1988
Company Overview: Yamazaki (UK) started to import CNC machine tools into the UK from the early 1980's. They quickly became an established UK supplier of quality CNC equipment using the MAZAK trade name. With the help of government grants, Yamazaki set up a purpose built manufacturing plant in Worcester, which still today has a major positive impact on the local community and economy.
When I joined Yamazaki as an Electrical assembler, they were still operating from a small Victoria built factory as the new factory was just being completed. I spent three months in Japan working with the Japanese assembly team to learn the assembly techniques and also to gain a first hand understanding of the Japanese work ethic. Following the training I was then involved with the 'fine tuning' of the new purpose built factory as well as organising the assembly line to start producing the first UK built CNC machines. Within three months I became electrical team leader and supervised a team of twenty assembling and testing staff on alternate day & evening shifts.

I joined Sound Creations because I wanted to turn my hobby into my job. I used to purchase a lot of sound and lighting equipment for them as I used to run a mobile disco. I really enjoyed working on and with the equipment and realised that my real interest lay with the electrical industry, not mechanical engineering. As general assembler I used and learnt many new skills from carpentry, metalworking, soldering and working from circuit diagrams etc. After several months I also began installing equipment at theatres and clubs. The hours were long and the pay really bad, but I really enjoyed playing with and building electrical systems.
