I participated in the quality improvement project led by the registrar in the department. It involved collating the data on the worn-out locks of the toilet doors in the wards and sending their details to the estate maintenance team to fix them.
I worked with a team of four doctors. My role in the project was similar to that of the two other doctors and it involved gathering data via the acquisition of pictures of the damaged locks, the identification codes of the doors, and their locations.
This Quality Improvement Project aimed to ensure that all patients on long-term nitrofurantoin therapy at the practice were being appropriately monitored in line with MHRA (2023) and NICE recommendations. I also aimed set a six-monthly target for the monitoring of these parameters according to the Airedale Trust formulary recommendations.
Specifically, the goal was to assess current monitoring practices, identify any gaps, and implement a structured system for regular review of liver function and respiratory symptoms. The overall aim was to improve patient safety by reducing the risk of undetected adverse effects associated with prolonged nitrofurantoin use and to embed a sustainable recall process into the practice's workflow.
