Befriending and Volunteering Coordinator

  • Recruitment, training and support of volunteers throughout various projects in the Older People's Service.
  • Coordinating the completion of DBS forms for volunteers and liaising with referees.
  • Managing the clients and ensuring their needs were supported
  • Directing volunteers to the correct clients. he Befriending project was split into two smaller projects; Telephone Befriending and Face to Face Befriending of which I coordinated both. I managed telephone Befrienders and the call lists daily ensuring that those of a higher priority received calls. It was very important that the volunteers were trained to a high standard and were well supported so that they were able to log their notes correctly on our database and were confident in handling their calls and recognising concerns.

Higher Level Teaching Assistant

Cornwallis Academy
Maidstone
10.2013 - 09.2017
  • Working alongside the Intervention Challenge Manager (ICM) and Head of Year/Wellbeing Lead, ensuring a safe and effective learning environment is available for students, in particular transitioning from key stage 2 to key stage 3.
  • My main role was to assist students in their learning environment. Supporting pupils during classes, creating and implementing various interventions outside of the classroom.
  • Working one-on-one with students as well as assisting with full class learning and leading small groups. I also run a daily homework club for the key stage 3 students, teaching them key study skills such as prioritizing. As well as managing the day-to-day support of these students I also communicated with both parents and teachers to provide a holistic approach to supporting students, particularly those who are struggling with transitioning into secondary school life in year 7.
  • With the assistance of a colleague, I ran the social skills programme for referred pupils. On completion of the programme, I created reports to show the impact and progress made by pupils for parents/guardians.
  • I supported pupils with ASD using the ‘I Am Unique’ programme, helping students to understand their disorder enabling them to be confident in their future and giving them the tools to be independent once leaving school.

Befriending Coordinator/Development Officer

Voluntary Action Within Kent (VAWK)
Maidstone
08.2010 - 10.2013

VAWK (now called Imago) is a County-wide charity, mainly running commissioned projects on behalf of KCC.

  • I was the Befriending Coordinator for Be Our Buddy in Swale and Maidstone and worked on this project since it was commissioned in 2012. The project enabled young people with disabilities to access mainstream activities with the temporary assistance of a Buddy.
  • As the Coordinator, I assessed referrals, carried out home visits, worked closely with activity providers and risk-assessed the activities and venues. I also promoted volunteering within schools and through the Volunteer Centres.
  • I recruited, trained and supported volunteers in their role as a Buddy. Then young people and volunteers were carefully matched up and their Buddying relationship was supported and monitored
  • I also ran a weekly, term-time youth club, FunZone which was set up in partnership with Charity M4S and InfoZone.

Previous to this, but still whilst working for VAWK I also:

  • Coordinated the Swale Weekend Fun Club, planning, budgeting and coordinating monthly day trips and overnight stays for young people with disabilities. This like BOB involved assessing the needs of young people however also administering medication and supervising staff.
  • Coordinated Dial 2 Drive, a community transport scheme spanning from Sevenoaks to Tunbridge Wells, where people in the community who can’t access public transport can be driven by volunteer drivers by both cars and minibuses. This project particularly supported elderly and disabled adults needing to access medical appointments but also enabled those without transport to go on outings shopping, visiting friends or even for days out to Eastbourne. Wherever possible if a client felt more comfortable with particular drivers and the drivers were happy to, I would book that same person for regular bookings.
  • My role involved booking drives with clients and arranging transport using an Access database. When needed I would find last-minute drivers when others had to cancel. Regularly calling both customers and clients and meeting with them face to face on occasion. As well as the volunteer drivers I supported volunteers who assisted with data input and other admin duties in the office.
  • I would produce invoices, log payments and drop checks into the bank for the project. I enjoyed this role but it was only a secondment. After this, I was asked to run the Be Our Buddy Scheme in Maidstone.
  • V Advisor, promoting volunteering and acting as a volunteer opportunity broker across the Maidstone area.
