As well as my regular nursing responsibilities, I was frequently in charge of the adult, acute in-patient ward where I would be responsible for the smooth running of the shift. This would primarily involve on-going risk assessments, organising admissions/discharges and coordinating staff effectively to maintain an effective and safe environment .
Caring with compassion and empathy was vital in my role. Working as part of a strong team was equally important, particularly when called upon to attend emergency situations either on the ward or within the unit.
1st employer after qualifying. During my 10 years I moved from a newly qualified nurse to taking on responsibility for ward shifts in settings such as rehabilitation and intensive care.
During this time my nursing skills and qualities developed quickly .
As well as the importance of clear and calm communication, my knowledge of mental health problems and care grew. I enjoyed working as part of a good team and giving the best care I could to the service users.
