In my current position, I have a strong focus on oncology patient care, bringing extensive expertise in delivering patient-centred and compassionate support. I have a proven ability to build therapeutic relationships and communicate effectively with patients and their families who are facing complex diagnoses and treatment decisions. I am skilled in providing tailored education on treatment plans and symptom management, empowering patients to make informed decisions about their care. I work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams to ensure coordinated and holistic care, and I am committed to maintaining the highest standards of patient confidentiality and professional practice. My dedication is focused on achieving the best possible outcomes for oncology patients and their families.
In my current role on an oncology ward, I provide effective, patient-centred care to individuals who are acutely unwell or undergoing treatment. Work closely with patients and their relatives, keeping them informed of progress and offering compassionate emotional support. I monitor vital signs, promptly recognising and escalating any deterioration in condition to the appropriate medical team. I also educate patients and families on treatment plans, potential side effects, and management strategies, while signposting them to additional support services such as Maggie’s and Macmillan. Caring for a diverse patient group, I support those receiving curative treatment as well as those approaching the end of life; collaborating closely with palliative care specialists and consultants to ensure holistic care.
As a newly qualified Staff Nurse, I began my career in Orthopaedic Trauma at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, where I had previously completed clinical placements as a student nurse. This provided me with a strong understanding of the patient caseload and ward environment. I cared for patients aged 16 and over with a wide range of orthopaedic injuries, with a particular focus on elderly patients presenting with hip fractures and multiple comorbidities. These complex needs often require careful discharge planning to ensure safe and effective transitions of care.
My role involved caring for both perioperative and postoperative patients, including those living with dementia who required enhanced observation and support. I worked closely with the multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality, patient-centred care, administering medications for pain management and symptom control, managing wound care to promote healing and prevent infection, and monitoring patients for signs of clinical deterioration. I maintained accurate, up-to-date patient records, responded effectively to medical emergencies, and applied current first aid and CPR skills as required.
Additionally, I prepared patients for surgery by adhering to fasting protocols, supported their recovery following surgical procedures, and coordinated discharges by providing appropriate follow-up advice, prescriptions, and medication education.
