Graduate Geo-environmental Consultant

Roberts Environmental Limited
Newcastle upon Tyne / London
09.2023 - 03.2025
  • Conducted development-led Phase I geo-environmental assessments for planning involving production of appropriate, pragmatic desk-based CSM's to evaluate site contaminative potential.
  • Produced Phase I Environmental Due Diligence reports for both acquisition and divestiture in order to outline issues, potential risk or liabilities from an environmental perspective prior to transaction.
  • Utilised databases such as the EA, Envirocheck, GeoIndex, county planning portals and the MRA Interactive Mapping tool.
  • Produced Conceptual Site Models using the source-pathway-receptor risk assessment.
  • Completed ground investigation site works, including logging strata from a variety of intrusive investigation methods.
  • Compiled RAMS and method statements for ground investigation works.
  • Managed and oversaw Agricultural Land Classification site surveys and Coal Mining Risk Assessment strip searches.
  • Supervised sub-contractors to ensure efficient and informative investigations.
  • Performed soakaway assessments in line with BRE 365 to assess permeability of relevant strata and inform future drainage design.
  • Validated ground gas protection through inspection and reporting.
  • Calculated suitable bearing capacity as well as ULS and SLS values inclusive of an appropriate settlement tolerance based on proposed development plans to assess the suitability of foundation solutions.
  • Authored Phase II Geo-environmental reports derived from many of the above-mentioned techniques and skills, encompassing a refined CSM, preliminary foundations appraisals based on site-specific ground conditions and often a preliminary waste classification.

Consultant

Roberts Environmental Limited
LONDON
03.2025 - Current

Whilst continuing to gain more experience in the areas listed above, some key additional responsibilities and experiences since promotion:

  • Established robust client relationships with leading building consultancies and developers across London and the UK.
  • Managed EDD portfolios for clients on care homes, private hospitals, and commercial estates.
  • Authored fee proposals and bids for Phase I Geo-environmental and EDD projects.
  • Early stages of generating fee proposals for Phase II projects and scoping up ground investigation works prior to bid submission.
  • Collaborated with a variety of industry professionals for effective project delivery.
  • Cross-sold existing services to maximize fee generation and strengthen client ties.
  • Managed multiple projects simultaneously whilst ensuring timely completion and quality control.
  • Held in-person meetings with current clients to scan horizon and gain insights on near-future market / development trends.
  • Ran a successful and profitable London Office following colleague departure.

Examples of some larger projects I've project managed recently are listed below:

  • Phase I and Phase II for the Redevelopment of a high-rise residential property in central London - Provided the client with the necessary staged approach required to meet planning conditions. Site works involved the organizing of multiple sub-contractors in order to investigate a current retaining wall feature, as well as obtaining critical information on ground conditions relating to the proposed mixed commercial and residential end-use. Logging of strata to BS 5930, in-situ testing methods, oversight of a range of intrusive investigation methods and ground gas and water monitoring were carried out.
  • Intrusive Slab Investigation and Geotechnical Assessment, Portland Commercial Estate, Barking - An investigation into the structural make-up of a current warehouse slab displaying visual evidence of cracking and subsidence, supported by progression of CFA boreholes and in-situ CBR testing (LWD) on the sub-grade beneath in order to inform a proposed new ground-bearing floor slab. However, extremely poor ground conditions resulted in a new ground-bearing floor slab not being feasible, and as such, the investigation and report was altered, in order to provide the client with valuable information on potential founding solutions.
  • 3 No. Oyster Care Homes EDD Portfolio - Preparation and delivery of three environmental with current flood risk due diligence reports for the proposed acquisition of newly developed care home facilities for a new client. This included a site inspection to gain a first-hand appreciation of site features, followed by reporting with any environmentally pertinent risks or liabilities outlined, a current desk-based FRA centred around available database information such as Envirocheck and the Environment Agency, an environmental risk assessment with relevant risk rating applied to each site and recommended actions ahead of purchase, where necessary.
  • Stage 3 Waste Removal, Squibb Yard, Stanhope Industrial Park, Essex - An extended period of 10 weeks on site, appointed by the client to ensure all waste removal and operations are legally compliant with WM3 guidance, provide consultancy services and liaise with the EA, evaluate contractor RAMS and method statements and review waste transfer notes for the removal of approximately 15,000m3 of stockpiled material (waste) produced by the previous site owner. This involved ensuring method statements for screening and removal of material were appropriate, the arrangement of an appropriate chemical testing regime and relevant suites in order to appropriately classify sections of the material prior to removal, the halting of works due to presence of suspected ACM's and ensuring all waste transfer notes and consignment notes were compliant with WM3 and Duty of Care Regulations with correct EWC codes and proof of classification.
