Operational Support Analyst

  • In my current role at UKMTO we maintain a white shipping picture by processing thousands of reports from all types of vessels in the Red sea, Indian ocean, Gulf of Aden and Oman and in the Arabian Gulf.
  • We also help vessels in this area if they are attacked or are in need of assistance by sharing information and offering guidance.
  • Another major part of the job is producing products for shareholders and industry using the large amount of data we have and manage every day.
  • I transitioned to become a full analyst within the team where instead of maintaining the white shipping picture and processing reports from vessels, I would collect, clean and analyse the data we received, from simple AIS data looking at patterns of life, average ship transits through chokepoints and ports, to looking at the years worth of incident reports and producing charts that show trends in the different methods of attack and area hotspots.

  • Working in a massive data center, I monitor numerous different tools that are required by JPA systems and all supported applications.
  • I have to identify and analyze faults and take corrective action.
  • Monitor the System backups and fault find or notify the appropriate team, in accordance with instructions, if any failures occur.

  • Administer data transfers between JPA servers and the Ops Bridge area PCs for production of Mobilization and other letters as detailed within WI’s.

  • I also manage and maintain ships networks.

  • This was usually done in person but I also worked remotely.
  • I also worked on networking projects in a group, where we would fault find on each others networks and work towards setting up a larger network.
