I served as a magistrate on the Merseyside bench between 2005 and 2022, when I reached the mandatory retirement age of 70. The Merseyside bench is a combination of courts in Liverpool, Sefton, St Helens and Wirral, busy courts covering the wider Merseyside region.
As Presiding Justice, I served the Magistracy in adult crime, youth courts and domestic violence courts.
I was a member of the Lord Chancellors Advisory Committee, involved in magistrate disciplinary situations, and recruitment and training of magistrates.
As an experienced JP, I was a member the Crown Court Appeals panel, sitting with crown court judges to hear appeals from the various courts in the region. These often involved the more serious and complex cases that required a second hearing, occasionally sitting on cases that ran for 2-3 days at times.
As a retired magistrate I remain on the supplementary panel, I am entitled to use the JP title when witnessing formal documents.
