I currently have my business where I want it to be, the every day running is not that time consuming so it allows me to do something that I enjoy doing.
Ideally I would like to find a job that has longevity, that I can put my time and effort into that will give me both a tangible income along with a psychic income too.
I am happy to go back into fitting, either 1st or 2nd fix or the manufacture & fitting of bespoke fitted furniture, or maybe something a little different? I excel at these and the perfectionist in me has always liked seeing the finished product, going by the adage of, if I wouldn’t accept the finished product, then the client shouldn’t either.
For a 55 year old I am physically fit and can pretty much work as hard or harder than those half my age.
I have a full portfolio of my work, I have been documenting it with photos for as far back as I can remember, all of which are available upon request.
My work has always spoken for itself and the quality of it has put me where I am now.
From March 2020 I decided to take a prototype tool that I invented back in 2006 and put it through all of the stages to get it into production.
I invented / designed a new hands free extraction tool for PPE, that when connected to the hose of a vacuum or extractor it would remove the dust and debris from power tools.
I took the idea and produced new prototypes, this led me to produce the tooling and I then took this new tool to market back in 2021.
This product has been sold globally with much success, it was featured on an episode of Dragons' Den back in 2023 and has won awards for innovation.
I have created something which has solved a problem that people have been trying to solve for more than 40 years, a simple problem that exists for everyone that creates dust when using power tools.
From a need came an idea and from that idea came a powerful product.
Since leaving Hammonds fitted furniture, I have spent my time working in the business and designing an upgraded version of this tool, of which I am now just awaiting UK patent confirmation, which should happen around August /September, the global IPCT has been applied for, which protects the patent worldwide until I decide what's next with it.
My business takes very little of my time now, which is why I am looking for something to occupy myself within the Carpentry field that I love, even if that is a temporary contract.
I am a trustworthy person and always give 110% in everything I do, this is how I have built my previous businesses, it's just the way that I am.
DBS checks on myself have been undertaken previously by various companies I have worked for with no issues and I am happy for further checks to be made.
Since March 2021 I have been working as a fitter for Hammonds Bedrooms and Furniture.
I have been fitting everything from standard wardrobes to bespoke items that need to be produced on site from raw materials.
Hammonds tend to give me more complicated jobs than most fitters that have been with them for several years as I have the competence, knowledge and ability to carry out the work on my own without supervision.
I took a 3 bedroom Bungalow that I owned and redeveloped the building and the grounds into 2 x 3 bedroom semi-detached chalet bungalows and a 3 bedroom detached house.
I undertook the management of the conversions and then after a couple of months, due to poor workmanship by the employed workforce, I was forced to take over the entire carpentry part of the projects.
I sold the 2 semi-detached bungalows and arranged a buy to let mortgage on the new build property of which I now rent out.
The sale of the first 2 properties gave me the cashflow to work on one of my inventions, that I have taken to market.
Early 2015 my Mum became ill and was diagnosed with terminal Bowel cancer, I looked after her until she passed.
Within a year of my Mum passing away, my wife became ill, I looked after her and she was diagnosed with terminal Bladder cancer, I cared for her too until she passed away.
In total I took 18 months off of work to aid in making my loved ones lives comfortable and happy until the end.
In 2009 I was involved in a road traffic accident where someone fell asleep at the wheel and I took the impact of his vehicle directly into my drivers door, this put me out of action for manual labour for nearly a year.
I was forced to sell my company that I had built and take on a more laid back work schedule, where I spent 3 or 4 days a week working for people on a self employed basis when needed, mostly to undertake work that was more specialised and needed a veteran carpenter that knew what they were doing.
This also allowed me to train in other areas that I had interests in.
During this time I gained my UAV pilots licence, I trained as as Rescue Scuba Diver and I also qualified in sports nutrition.
In 2003 I found a niche in the market and started manufacturing custom radiator covers, this turned into a full on business and allowed me to stop manufacturing fitted furniture and concentrate on this.
I turned this into a respectable business and became one of the most popular and renowned Radiator Cover manufacturers in the UK, supplying bespoke sized radiator covers to clients all over the UK.
I stood apart from other companies in the way that I was able to produce these covers for all radiators, from standard straight fit, through to angled and curved bay covers, of which I think the largest was just over 19 feet long and was manufactured in 3 sections that slotted together.
I have always preferred the more complicated projects that require the use of my brain to figure things out.
In 1996 I decided that I needed to get away from working in central London and away from Sub contracting. I decided to leave a company I was working for as I heard from the finance team that it was probably going to go into liquidation, so I decided to start a little business from my garage, this eventually turned into a 2,500 square foot workshop. I began making bespoke fitted furniture for clients and quickly became a name to be trusted, I began winning work throughout South East London and the Kent and Surrey areas and produced everything from fitted wardrobes, fitted alcove units and custom kitchens. I worked in all manner of materials, from solid timbers to composite boards. I have an extensive portfolio of all of my works, from the manufacture stages through to the finished fitted products. This area was where I felt I was meant to be, I loved calculating the cutting lists just as much as fitting the work and admiring what I had achieved. Some of the varied work I produced within this period ranged from the complete fitting out of a custom RV in reclaimed Teak for a TV producer, through to projects for the BBC on their TV programs, (Home Front in the Garden, Home Front Inside Out) I was someone the BBC would again call in when the projects were specialised and they needed a veteran they could trust.
I gained an impressive client base, that varied from the general public through to MP's and TV and Film personalities.
For these 6 years I worked for a respected construction company based out of Peckham in London.
This company had contracts for the more prestigious clientele and I was made foreman on all of the projects I worked.
Clients ranged from famous TV & film celebrities, lawyers and politicians, working throughout Greater London.
My duties ranged from running the sites as a working foreman with a team of carpenters, through to specialised work like increasing the depth of a fire surround on site by 100mm and hand carving all of the intricate mouldings to match the existing.
Much of the work on these projects was the fitting of bespoke units, ranging from Kitchens through to wardrobes and other fitted furniture, this is where I gained much of my knowledge of cabinet making as I would have to be able to make alterations to the units to allow fitting.
I enjoyed this work immensely, there is a great sense of accomplishment when you can look at a finished project and understand what actually went into the finished item.
From when I left school in 1986 through to the end of 1989 I was a Chef, my Dad had persuaded me to avoid the life of a Carpenter as he knew just how hard it could be.
However, the catering life for me was not really what I wanted, even though I excelled in it, winning many awards and being recognised in many national newspapers.
In early 1989 I became ill, my wight dropped to a ridiculously low level and I decided to change my career back to something I loved, Carpentry and working with wood.
From the age of 4 years old I would both help my Dad in his Joinery shop and work with him on site, (Back then this was not frowned upon)
This is where I learned much of my knowledge about working with wood, my Dad was a master craftsman and he had a belief that I should learn the way he did, and that was the traditional way first, then the new easier way of doing things, this is where I learned to carve and mould wood by hand, I had all manner of tools that I became proficient with, from hand planes, carving chisels and to hand routers.
I will never forget the first day that my Dad left me on site to hang my first Front Door, the look on the clients face was more worried than I was, my Dad told them that if I didn’t do a good job, he would rectify any problems and they would not have to pay for the work..! At the time I was I was 13 years old and my Dad was paid without hesitation by the clients.
I have never been shy of hard work, I think this was drummed into me from a young age, but this time of my life was extremely valuable to me, as I learned a trade in a way that is sadly not taught anymore.
I am current on all level certifications for working in the Construction Industry
I am a Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card holder.
I have the current Operatives - Health, Safety and environment test certifications.
