  • I was working as a veterinary nurse for the pet claims department
  • My role was to answer incoming calls and make outbound calls, I worked in a team of ten veterinary nurse's manning the veterinary helpline
  • The purpose of the veterinary helpline is to help veterinary practices with queries regarding clients policy's, accounts and settlements on claims
  • As part of my veterinary nurse role I did referrals, this is when a claims advisor is unsure of medications, operations, conditions and signs and symptoms they refer to me and I highlight relevant information relating to claims and educating claims advisors
  • I also managed and checked correct costs as part of the role buy making deductions on claims and relating conditions, thus saving the company money
  • I also on a daily basis carried out pre-authorisations which is when I check a clinical history to see if the illness falls within policy limits and terms
  • Part of my job role was to have good communication and listening skills and these are checked monthly in audits

The Downs Veterinary Referral Practice

  • Whilst working at the Downs Referral practice my responsibilities were to maintain and monitor anaesthesia, assist with imaging (MRI, Radiograph and ultrasound, Endoscope), assist as a theatre nurse, assist as a medical nurse, manage patients with complex illnesses, advise the owners, take phone calls and book appointments, use the computer system, take payment, produce documents for the owners to receive on discharge of the patient
  • I have also attended a few CPD’s such as management of spinal patients, anaesthesia and recently a 2 day course on emergency medicine for nurses and critical care
