• Simple analysis of samples and operate or load expensive and complex laboratory equipment under supervision in one of three sections of Biochemistry, Haematology and Immunology.
• Storage and dispatch of patient reports
• To enter patient data and results onto the laboratory computer system.
• Perform specimen reception, integrity checking and LIMS data entry ensuring full traceability and adherence to identification criteria
• Prioritise urgent and high-risk samples to support timely clinical decision-making
• Operate centrifuges and automated laboratory analysers under SOP guidance
• Support quality control processes and report QC performance issues to senior scientific staff
• Maintain compliance with SOPs, COSHH, infection control and laboratory safety standards
• Participate in audits, CPD activities and service improvement initiatives

• Specimen reception duties; labelling, checking the details and troubleshooting any issues.
• Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to book specimens and record any examinations/ tests carried out to the specimen.
• Specimen dissection support: Support BMS and Pathologist with specimen dissection.
• Sectioning/ microtomy of surgical blocks
• Embedding: Embedding surgical tissues in paraffin wax.
• Setting up the staining machine; changing all the reagents, carrying quality checks in H&E staining
• H&E staining manually and automated
• Carrying out special stains; PAS, PASD. ABPAS/D, ZN, Cohngo Red and other special stains.
• Microscopy: Identification of specific tissues
• Assist with training other staff
• Histopathology
• Skills: Specimen reception duties, Tissue processing, Microtomy, Embedding, Staining (H&E) and special stains, documentation, teamwork.
• Knowledge: Tissue morphology, staining protocols, quality control, pathology workflow, health & safety.
• Experience: Routine tissue sample analysis, Sectioning/ microtomy of surgical blocks, embedding, sectioning, staining, supporting pathologists
• Specialist Techniques: Immunohistochemistry, special stains, cryostat use, digital pathology, QC checks
• Analysers: Thermo Excelsior ES, Sakura Tissue-Tek, Ventana BenchMark ULTRA
• Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS): Record specimen details and any examinations/ tests carried out to the specimen.

Histopathology:

• Skills: Specimen reception duties, Tissue processing, Microtomy, Embedding, Staining (H&E) and special stains, documentation, teamwork.

• Knowledge: Tissue morphology, staining protocols, quality control, pathology workflow, health & safety.

• Experience: Routine tissue sample analysis, Sectioning/ microtomy of surgical blocks, embedding, sectioning, staining, supporting pathologists

• Specialist Techniques: Immunohistochemistry, special stains, cryostat use, QC checks

• Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS): Record specimen details and any examinations/ tests carried out to the specimen.

Microbiology:

• Skills: Microbiological cultures and identifications, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and Gram staining, Biochemical Staining; Coagulase, oxidase, indole, and catalase tests.
• Knowledge: Handling and working with selective media and differential media for growth and identification of different microorganisms Bacterial staining, contamination control.
• Experience: Handling samples, including urine, blood, wound, and respiratory culture, and reporting of the results, Preparation of media’s: using different media to grow bacterial and fungal infections
• Specialist techniques and competencies: Aseptic technique, culturing, staining, sensitivity disc placement, API strips, and media preparation.
• Analysers: Blood culture Analyser (BD Bactec FX, BacT ALERT Virtuo), Urine analyser (DIRUI FUS2000 / AVE-772) Autoclave, Centrifuge, UV chambers, Deep refrigerator, Incubators, Microscope

• Skills: Tissue processing, microtomy, staining (H&E), special stains, slide interpretation, documentation, teamwork.
• Knowledge: Tissue morphology, staining protocols, quality control, pathology workflow, health & safety.
• Experience: Routine tissue sample analysis, embedding, sectioning, staining.
• Analysers: BIOBASE automated tissue processor, Thermo-Shandon Gemini H&E Stainer, OS-315 Rotary Microtome, RT-80C Tissue Embedding Centre.
• Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to book specimens and record any examinations/ tests carried out to the specimen

Special Chemistry:

• Skills: Immunoassays, analyser operation, result interpretation, and quality control.
• Knowledge: Hormones, vitamins, tumour markers, assay principles (CLIA, ELISA), and quality standards (ISO 15189).
• Experience: Performed tests for TSH, Vitamin D, PSA, etc.; maintained analysers; ensured QC/EQA compliance.
• Specialist Techniques: CLIA, ELISA, protein electrophoresis.
• Analysers: Abbott Architect i1000SR
• Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to book specimens and record any examinations/ tests carried out to the specimen

Biochemistry:

• Skills: Sample preparation, analyte quantification, calibration, data validation, quality control, teamwork, laboratory safety.
• Knowledge: Metabolic pathways, biomarkers, reference ranges, analytical techniques, clinical correlations.
• Experience: Routine analysis of blood, serum, and urine; result verification; troubleshooting assays; audit participation.
• Specialist Techniques: Spectrophotometry, immunoassays (ELISA), electrophoresis, and chromatography (HPLC).
• Analysers; AU480 Beckman Coulter Chemistry Analyser, Roche Cobas, Abbott Architect.

Special Chemistry:

• Skills: Specialised biochemical testing, analyser handling, assay calibration, quality control, data interpretation.
• Knowledge: Hormone/tumour marker assays, immunoassay principles, quality standards, sample handling, clinical relevance.
• Experience: Routine hormone, vitamin, and tumour marker testing.
• Specialist Techniques: CLIA, ELISA, protein electrophoresis.
• Analysers: Roche Cobas e411.

Hematology:

• Skills: CBC testing, PT/APTT, ESR tests, blood analysis, quality control management, calibration, reagent preparation, and equipment maintenance.
• Knowledge: Hematological parameters, coagulation profiles, blood disorders
• Experience: Routine and specialist hematology testing
• Specialist techniques and competencies: Automated & semi-automated analysers, chemical solution preparation, accurate classification.
