Security Manager/Operational Manager

G4S-HMP Five Wells
Wellingborough, Northamptonshire
10.2021 - 04.2025
  • Part of my role is to make sure each houseblock and area within the prison has sufficient staff. If the staffing levels are low, I would be in charge of making the decision to close a houseblock down. I also look for solutions to how we can staff these areas to sufficient levels.
  • To be in charge and responsible for the day to day running of the whole prison. I was responsible for all mass movement of prisoners and direct a team of officers to ensure this is done safely. I will also ensure that all incidents within the prison are handed to me to process and investigate.
  • Another main responsibility I have is to authorise prisoners leaving the establishment, for example, to hospital. My responsibility is to ensure the safety of the public is the number one priority. I also have to complete the necessary risk assessments and insure staff are confident and aware of what they are doing prior to escorting a prisoner into the community.
  • As a security manager and commanding manager of the prison I have achieved many milestones. I was the first active manager to secure the prison at night when we had our first prisoners come to our establishment. I also hold a proud achievement as I was the first manager to release our first prisoner back into the community. I have had the chance to complete many courses such as bronze command, family liaison officer training and also incident management training.
  • Trained new security staff, imparting knowledge of best practices, operational procedures, and use of security equipment.
  • Educated staff on security measures, raising awareness about potential risks and preventive practices.
  • Monitored staff performance and developed improvement plans.
  • Monitored CCTV systems and alarm responses, analysing footage for suspicious activities and ensuring rapid response to alerts.
  • Liaised with management to develop and implement effective security protocols and emergency response procedures.
  • Coordinated with law enforcement and emergency responders during security incidents, acting as the primary point of contact.
  • Organised security briefings and workshops for staff on safety protocols, emergency response, and threat awareness.
  • Conducted security checks at building entrances, screening visitors for prohibited items and granting authorised access.
  • Enforced company policies regarding security and confidentiality, addressing violations promptly to minimise risks.

Prison Custody Officer

Serco, HMP Doncaster Prison
04.2017 - 09.2021
  • As a Prison Custody Officer I have a duty of care to both staff and prisoners. I am the first point of contact for a prisoner who enters the prison when they are sent from court or transferred. I have developed my communication skills through this role as I have to be patient and understanding to challenging people on a regular basis.
  • I have also developed my mental health and physical health as a prison officer. It is mostly important to have a straight way of thinking in this job and there are many things within this job that could break a person down. I am also trained for close protection and I use these skills on a regular basis to keep staff, myself, visitors and prisoners safe in the establishment.
  • Time management is also key, I believe I have excellent time management as I have to set a regime in place to make sure day to day life within prison is running. I also take pride in my time management outside of work and I am always prepared to do what is necessary to support my colleagues.
  • IT is also a very important aspect to the job I have developed my skills in IT during my times at school, college and University. I am fluent with Microsoft programmes and also several security programmes that the government uses for database tracking and inputting.
  • I believe my leadership skills are excellent, I lead a team of three officers on a daily basis to complete daily tasks and also to restore peace and keep day to day life running in the prison. I have learnt so much during my time in this career as I have been given opportunities to even pass my skills on to other Prison Custody Officers in the Caribbean.
  • As a Prison Custody officer I have learnt the trade to its full potential. I have many achievements what I have achieved as Prison Custody Officer, I am currently a mentor within the prison this is a big achievement for me because it enables me to pass on the skills I have developed and learnt onto new staff and also existing staff that struggles with certain skills they need to work on.
  • The biggest achievement I have accomplished was being selected out of 11 Prison Custody Officers in the UK to go to the Caribbean island of Grant Turk. I was selected to go to Grand Turk to teach and develop skills of Prison Officers on the island. I was based on the island for 10 weeks during that time I also did a variety of research and development to help contribute towards the rebuild of the prison system on the island that supported 6 other islands in the area.
