The skills I gained during my agricultural engineering course at college has greatly helped me during my entire career. I have always been confident to take on any repairs, servicing and maintenance on the equipment I use. Some of this experience came from my work placement at R D Websters Ltd.
I really enjoyed my first job with C & I Wade, as the role was so varied, allowing me to quickly gain experience in lots of tasks. Unfortunately this was a seasonal position and so I left for a permanent position else where.
At Huntapac I quickly progressed to operating the carrot harvester, this role involved being in charge of a large team ensuring they were working safely and efficiently, organising with the transport office to have lorries due every hour. Time keeping was of the upmost importance, and any problems or break downs had to be solved quickly to keep up with demand.
My current job is farm based but we also offer contract services, mainly in the drainage sector. I mainly work independently in this role, which entails organising and completing the work, keeping good records and ensuring the jobs are carried out to a high standard. This role has given me a lot of experience in the digger sector.
The business I own is mainly based in the equine industry, offering paddock maintenance and fencing. This has been run along side my full time position however my employment has taken precedence and I have worked with my employer to ensure it does not disrupt his business. I have gained great management and business experience whilst running this company, but I feel I am now ready to take the next step in my career and a new challenge.
My main duties in this role are in our drainage board contract services,
I managed and carried out all the ditch grass flailing which consisted of an average of 120 thousand meters per year, deciding how to carry out this to the most efficient manner. I would also carry out most repairs and maintenance reporting back the farm owner periodically.
I also operate a 360 excavator with an extension jib and 4.5 meter weed cutting basket, clearing the water courses of vegetation.
The digger work can be varied, from replacing culverts to using tree shears to cut down trees and all works in between.
Additionally I spread fertiliser, slug pellets and carried out varied cultivations and harvest tasks.
I have been running my own company along side my current employment, offering paddock services and fencing, mainly directed at the equine industry.
I have had three members of self employed staff at times and have gained good experience overseeing staff and projects, from planning and ordering materials, liaising with customers and suppliers, maintaining my own equipment, and problem solving solutions when things haven't gone to plan.
Additionally I do all the paper work and Invoicing that comes with this work.
At Huntapac I started out on trailers carting carrots and parsnips but soon progressed to operating most equipment including taking on the main role of harvesting, which involved overseeing a team of staff, communicating with a wide range of other staff throughout the country to organise the timely production of fresh root produce, and meet demand of a large packing warehouse.
I travelled around the country in my role, including time spent in Scotland and Shropshire, assisting contractors to meet expectations and quality controls.
C and I Wade was my first harvest job after finishing college, as a large agricultural contractors it was a great learning experience as I was given the opportunities to do lots of varied tasks. My main role was round baling.
Other tasks included, muck spreading, mowing hay, rowing hay and silage, bale handling and loading artic lorries, ploughing and secondary cultivations.
