During my job at a restaurant I gained valuable team and independent working experience, developing my communication skills with both my co-workers and customers, being able to learn how to respond to difficult and stressful situations whether that be with a co-worker or a customer. I'm a quick learner developing skills taught to me by my seniors in an efficient time frame, quickly adapting to new responsibilities and taking direction from those who are more experienced and qualified than myself to complete a task to highly satisfactory extent. During my time as a HCSW I have further developed upon many of these skills having to work in a large team during stressful situations such as medical emergencies on the ward being able to use time management and organisational skills to ensure I and the team can give the best and necessary care for those in need. I have undergone CAIT training and applied it on the ward, being able to effectively handle difficult personalities, behaviours and those experiencing delirium among other mental illnesses. Something that would be incredibly useful when working with these patients in the radiology department as many are likely to be scared and confused. Additionally, I have also completed manual handling training and have used it multiple times as a HCSW when helping patients. During my stints as HCSW in charge I have also developed my leadership skills showing i can take on further responsibilities when necessary. These experiences has helped me to become more confident in myself and my capabilities in the working environment and in my own confidence to learn new skills.
Within my role as a HCSW I have diligently worked to uphold the core UHS trust values, this entails my commitment to performing quality care upholding the main value of patient first care, tolerance and equality for both patients and staff.
During my time as a HCSW I have learned many new skills, both life and work skills, such as effective communication, care and compassion, efficient learning, effective teamwork, how to deal with high stress environments and how to deal with behaviour that challenges, all to ensure that I can uphold my commitment to give the best care to patients and treat my fellow colleagues with respect.
I have also learnt core leadership skills having been put in charge on several occasions, some of these skills include, how to best support my team using constructive feedback and guidance to ensure that daily tasks are completed within accordance to the trust values placing patients and their health and mental wellbeing first.
I started on the till, taking customer orders and communicating with other members of staff to ensure customers orders were correct and the fryers were informed of what needed cooking, developing my communication skills with both customers and teammates.
After several months of working I was promoted to the fryer position being trained to prepare and cook food, ensuring my cooking area was clean and in accordance with food hygiene laws, teaching me how to effectively deal with high stress environments and situations. I was trusted with both opening and closing the restaurant, as well as handling the money at the end of the shift.
During my final year I was often left in charge of the restaurant and the other members of staff, further developing my skills in communication and leadership.
