Summary

Entering the workforce as an apprentice electrician on a North Sea oil platform in 2017, has a nuanced understanding of the complexities of the fossil fuel industry and the challenges in transitioning to renewable sources of energy.
After several years as a qualified electrician, having worked on two oil and gas platforms, decided to leave the North Sea to study sociology full time at the Open University. This was down to a desire for change, not only for oneself but for society. By arming oneself with knowledge, hoped to contribute to mitigating inequalities and conserving the natural environment by exploring new ways of energy production and distribution.
Studying sociology widened horizons and gave the concepts required to discuss and the most pressing issues in relation to the environment, justice and inequality. Passed first year with merit but was forced to return to work full time for financial reasons.
After working as an electrician onshore for several years one had become somewhat lost and directionless. Decided to travel to Australia. Found work as an electrician, installing fire systems in high rise buildings in the Sydney business district, it was well paid, but something was missing. Rather than continue, decided to follow passion for food and begun working as a chef in a busy Sicilian Trattoria. Learned many lessoning working in such a demanding environment, mainly to be methodical and apply oneself wholeheartedly to one task at any given moment, whilst maintaining a structure of successive tasks in one’s mind under pressure.
Returned home to be with family in April 2023 and returned to work as a chef in Scotland in May until September after which travelled to London to begin a degree in interdisciplinary studies at the London Interdisciplinary School which had been deferred prior to leaving for Australia the year before.
Has gained a deeper understanding of the world since moving to London and experiencing intense flows of information daily. Has improved existing skills such as essay writing, leadership and communication whilst having learned many more such as basic computer programming, video editing, systems thinking, ethical data collection, public speaking and presentation. Has learned about many disciplines including law, political ecology, environmentalism and psychology. All these skills have improved ones understanding of society and how it might be possible to implement change. All these skills were used recently in curating a consultancy report for Tower Hamlets Council regarding their proposed climate policies in their 2026 development plan (can provide a copy).
Most recently worked in a French restaurant in London. However, now feels ready to apply one’s skills to improving society and the environment. Dreams of a utopian future with renewable energy abundance along with free and equal distribution, granting opportunity to all socioeconomic backgrounds and sparking innovation from the most disadvantaged groups.
