I am currently studying Business Management, Psychology, Design and Techhnology at Cheam High School. Throughout my course I have gained valuable skills that I belive will assist me in my future career and studies.
I was very fortunate to spend almost two weeks on my work experience at Sky UK Limited, which has given me my first exposure to work life and which has enabled me to understand how the world of media and technology works.
I attended and participated in meetings where the discussions were very interesting thereby allowing me to gather a lot of useful information that will no doubt help me both in my future career and personal life. It also gave me an opportunity to talk to various people at all levels: Software engineering manager and scrum masters.
I learnt how communication and teamwork is key. This includes active listening, responsibility, and honesty. Furthermore, I also had the opportunity to learn about key technological skills such as Python/Excel. I will ensure to apply what I have learnt during my time at Sky in my studies as well as in my future.
Outside of academia, I volunteer once a week at our local Library, this allows me to meet with the members of the public and contribute directly into the community. This experience gives me a sense of responsibility, develops my organisational skill, as well as further enhancing my communication skills. My main responsibilities are helping and assisting library users with their book request, organising books on shelves in alphabetical order. This in turn has increased my confidence in a professional setting as well as teamwork.
Through the school system, I had the privilege to be part of the Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. I thoroughly enjoyed the outdoor experience. It helped me to connect with nature which I love. Whilst being part of a team we had to organise, assign roles, take on responsibilities, manage personalities as well as managing ourselves in an alien environment. This experience has broadened my horizon as well as built my inner strength as well as resilience. It also gave me a taste of leadership since I had to take on the role of team leader on several occasions. We had to camp outside, trek in the woods while carrying our luggage, camping equipment and food on our backs for three long days. It was certainly very challenging and memorable.
